"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see."
One of the most famous, and beloved songs (since long ago) caught my ear, so I decided to annalyze its poetic characteristics. As you can see from these lines, there is some consonance alternating at the ends (like "sound" with "found", and "me" with "see"). The whole thing is also a quatrain - stanza of 4 lines. It has a rather hopefull, humble tone to it, and obviously, symbolism can be detected within the lines. Also, thinking about it, it could be considered a sort of ballad, because it tells the audience a story - the story of John Newton. He was a lost soul, sailing the high seas, working as a slave-trader. But then, by the grace of God, he became free and he even wrote this song as a humble dedication to God.
"Hey there Delilah What's it like in New York City? I'm a thousand miles away But girl tonight you look so pretty Yes you do Time Square can't shine as bright as you I swear it's true
Hey there Delilah Don't you worry about the distance I'm right there if you get lonely Give this song another listen Close your eyes Listen to my voice it's my disguise I'm by your side" - Plain White T
Over the past few months this song "Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T has become very popular. This song has many poetic characteristics such as, alliteration and consonance and rhythm (found in lines 2, 4, 6, and 8.) Also this song could be viewed as a dramatic monologue. This man's longing for Delilah is something he feels strongly about and is conveying strong emotion toward her and the distance between them. Tone becomes a feature also he tries to convey his attitude toward his loss of Delilah and how it affected him being away from her but he gives a loving, familiar tone that is inviting and intriguing at the same time
" such a silly game we play, like a summers day in may."
"love" by matt white has many of the poetry terms throughout it first it has the obvious simile the is comparing the two terms using like or as and also it is a ballad which tells a story that is meant to be sung or recited, and this poem i think is sort of an ode but to a person but a feeling which is love that it is kind of explaning the happiness emotion and throughout it has many rymeing words.
"It starts in my toes and I crinkle my nose where ever it goes I always know that you make me smile please stay for a while now just take your time where ever you go" - "Bubbly" by Colbie Caillat This song has many poetic terms that we have discussed. This song has consonance at the ends of the lines. For example, nose and toes, smile and while. It is also kind of like a ballad becuase it contains simple stanzas with a recurrant refrain.
"No need to worry about everything I've done Lived every second like it was my last one. Don't look back got a new direction Loved you once, needed protection. You're still a part of everything I do, you're on my heart just like a tattoo, Just like a tatto, I'll always have you."
Tatto by Jordan Sparks has become a very popular song these days. This song contains some poetic terms. In the end the end of the song she uses a simile "you're on my heart just like a tattoo" obviously this means that her so called lover will always be in her heart. This song has basically the same rythem without. It also has rhyming in ever 2 lines.
"Softly we tremble tonight, picture perfect fading smiles are all that's left in site, I said I'd never leave you'll never change I'm not satisfied with where I'm at in life.
Am I supposed to be happy? When all I ever wanted, it comes with a price. Am I supposed to be happy? When all I ever wanted, it comes with a price." Cat and Mouse-The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
In this song, there are some consonance, such as 'tonight' and 'site'. The theme of this song is about a relationship and how two people said that they would be commited to each other, but things didn't work out and they changed. Therefore, the tone is sad because the guy is upset about loosing his girlfriend and doesn't know if he can be happy again. Throughout the song, there are many words that rhyme and contradiction and doubtfulness are shown throughout the song.
"Never underestimate my Jesus. You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you your wrong.
Never underestimate my Jesus When the world around you crumbles He will be strong, He will be strong" -The moments I feel faint Relient K
The song Moments I Feel Faint has a lot of meaning. There is a hopeful tone that we do not have to face the world on our own. there are a couple caesuras in the song that pause to call attention to instrumental moments and the soft theme. There is an iamb in the song and symbolizes as people needing God, and how He is always there.
"Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you Nobody wanna see us together Nobody thought we'd last forever"
I chose this song because this is one of my many all time favorite songs. This song has a little bit of rhyming in it where it says "together" and "forever" in the last two lines of the lyrics above. The tone of these lyrics is happy because they have each other and they are lasting a long time when no one thought they would.
"I want fabulous, That is my simple request, All things fabulous, Bigger and better and best, I need something inspiring to help me get along, I need a little fabulous is that so wrong?"
I chose these lyrics because i enjoy the song's flow. It's characteristics are its cadence rhyming schemes and it's a ballad.I believe its a ballad because it is about a girl who feels she needs the best, so she tells her story to us listeners.
In this song it appears to be a ballad I also think it contains a blank verse there is also a refrain. There is a slant rhyme
Born to lead - hoobastank
With eyes closed tightly, I march so blindly. Pretending everything's fine, 'Cause you're there to keep me in line. I don't want your guidance, I'll break my silence. So sick of asking and being denied and now I realise.
We're holding the key, to unlock our destiny, We were Born To Lead. We're finally free, no longer following, We were Born To Lead... we were Born To Lead.
You can't ignore me (you can't ingnore me) You cant think for me (you can't think for me) Your world will come crashing down to the ground, 'Cause I figured you out.
We're holding the key, to unlock our destiny, We were Born To Lead. We're finally free, no longer following, We were Born To Lead... we were Born To Lead.
I use to think I'm ALL alone, But now I see our numbers grow. I'm not afraid to break away, Think on my own
With eyes wide open, My new life begins. Without you there to tell me, when, where and how, And you can't stop me now!
We're holding the key, to unlock our destiny, We were Born To Lead. We're finally free, no longer following, We were Born To Lead... we were Born To Lead.
We're holding the key, to unlock our destiny, We were Born To Lead We're finally free, no longer following, We were Born To Lead.
"This is the clock upon the wall This is the story of us all This is the first sound of a newborn child, Before he starts to crawl This is the war that's never won This is a soldier and his gun This is the mother waiting by the phone, Praying for her son
[Chorus] Pictures of you, pictures of me Hung upon your wall for the world to see Pictures of you, pictures of me Remind us all of what we used to be"Pictures of you by the last goodbye...
In this song there is consonance like in the first verse, 'wall and all and won and gun.'In a way it is an elegy. It also had some imagery in the song. The theme is a lot of random things but talking about how pictures show us what we were like in the past and how we are now.
"Driving through town just my boy and me With a happy meal in his booster seat Knowing that he couldn't have the toy Till his nuggets were gone -->Green traffic light turned straight to red<-- I hit my breaks and mumbled under my breath His fries went a flying and his orange drink covered his lap Well then my four year old said a four letter word That started with "s" and I was concerned So I said son now now where did you learn to talk like that
[Chorus one]
He said I've been watching you dad, ain't that cool I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you -->And eat all my food and grow as tall as you are<-- We got cowboy boots and camo pants Yeah we're just alike, hey ain't we dad I wanna do everything you do So I've been watching you
We got back home and I went to the barn I bowed my head and I prayed real hard Said lord please help me help my stupid self Then this side of bedtime later that night Turning on my son's scooby doo nightlight He crawled out of bed and he got down on his knees He closed his little eyes, folded his little hands -->And spoke to god like he was talking to a friend<-- And I said son now where'd you learn to pray like that
[Chorus two]
He said I've been watching you dad, ain't that cool I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you -->And eat all my food and grow as tall as you are<-- We like fixing things and holding mama's hand Yeah we're just alike, hey ain't we dad I wanna do everything you do So I've been watching you
[Bridge]
With tears in my eyes I wrapped him in a hug Said my little bear is growing up He said but when I'm big I'll still know what to do
[Chorus three]
Cause I've been watching you dad, ain't that cool I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you And eat all my food and grow as tall as you are -->By then I'll be as strong as superman<-- We'll be just alike, hey won't we dad When I can do everything you do Cause I've been watching you" Watching You ~Rodney Atkins
In this song there are several similes (<-- and -->) as well as many other poetry terms. there is also a few natural pauses (bold).
The plot of this song is a dad and his son, the dad is a good guy with all his mistakes and his son has caught up on some bad language. The dad is telling his son its bad and then the boy goes well I been watching you dad. so its saying don't go doing thing you don't want your kids to do.
"~In the light of the sun,~ ~Is there anyone?~ ~Oh it has begun.~ Oh dear, you look so lost, ~Eyes are red~ ~And tears are shed,~ This world you must've crossed. You said,

"'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table No one can find the rewind button, girl. So cradle your head in your hands And breathe... just breathe, Oh breathe, just breathe"
This song breathe by anna nalik shows a great use of simile by using like to compare life to an hourglass in the way that we cant go back to change any thing about the past but we can change our future if we wanted to.
(I recommend her{Jesca Hoop} to anyone who likes strange, interesting, different, smooth, music- changes every song.If your looking for someone who is completely different and weird, but in a good way= Kate Bush. )
[If anyone wants recommends for other types of music_any type_ than I'm the person to ask!]
Rattle, rattle, rattle grass, I hope that you won't bite You can save your venom, let me pass, I'm headed to the hive
It demonstrates personification, _rattle, rattle, rattle grass, I hope that you won't bite... well pretty much the rest too. The song also has metaphor in it as well, you just have to be looking for it (well you have to be looking for anything like this in music-it's meant to entertain, ease the mind, and overall feel!
