Hero?

In Book 12 of The Odyssey, does Odysseus restrain himself regarding a warning from Tiresias, treatment of his crew, and obedience to Circe? Do the actions of Odysseus make him a hero? Why or why not? Defend your response with at least one quote from Book 12. Blog response due by Tuesday, November 24th.

I dont think that this alone makes him a hero. I only think this makes him wiser. He dosent look like a hero to his men at all. every thing he has done has led to the loss of more men. But knowing what Odysseus knows, he is a hero to us, who realise that Odysseus is saving lifes by choosing the path to loose only six men rather that the whole crew and the ship.
We do see that he warns his men not to eat the cattle of Helios, but this only wise, not heroic.

I think that Odysseus is a hero. Yes, he has lost many men, but he had no other choice. In this situation, i think that Odysseus is doing the herioc thing to do by chosing only six men to die insead of his whole crew and ship. He even tries to protect his men since he took the beeswax and "laid it thick on their ears."

I do think this makes Odysseus hero, maybe not the best hero but still a hero. Odysseus does his best to protect his men. "... I carried wax along the lone, and laid it thick on their ears." But many paths Odysseus chooses leads to many deaths of his men.

I do think Odysseus is a hero because he saves many men instead of his whole crew dieing. He also puts bee's wax in their ears to protect them from the sirens. "...,and laid it think on their ears." Odysseus is a hero for protecting his men.

i think odyssyoes is a hero because he made the best of the choices given to him even thought he lost men he tried to save most of them but i think that he shaould have told his men a bout the dilema.

i do think that his actions made him a hero. the reason why is because he faught to get out there and he deserves that credit.

He may have saved some men but he disrespected his wife, and broke many of the host/guest relationship so no he is not a hero.

I do think that he is a hero because he tries his best to save his men. "Going forward i carried wax along the line, and laid it thick on their ears." That shows us that he was trying his best to protect his men from the sirens. He is still a hero even though many of his men died on their journey.

I think that Odysseus is a hero in book twelve because, he is obedient to the ones who could take all of his men. He listens to the warnings and does this, "...I carried wax along the line, and laid it thick on their ears." this protects his men by making it unable to hear the songs that the sirens are singing. He is not selfish and he thinks about his men before himself which makes him a hero.

i do not think that odyssioeoucious was a here because even though he did what he was told, a hero would have done what he knew he should have, he would have not listened and done what he wanted.

In a way Odysseus actions make him a hero, because he tries to protect his crew. Odysseus protects his crew when they encounter the sirens. "I carried wax along the line, and laid it thick on their ears."pg. 525. In doing this he helped save his crew and get them safely pass the sirens. i think this makes him a hero.

I do think Odysseus is a hero because he tried to protect his crew in this harsh time. Odysseus "carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and rolled them in my hands until they softened." He then put the wax in his crews ears. Yes, few of Odysseus's men died but not all did.

I don't think hes a hero because heros are sapose to save people, and he doesnt. In fact he kills his whole crew a few times over. A hero doesnt tell and retell his stories just to be reconized. Odisious does, he tells the story, and adds stuff on to make him self seem better and better. A hero is not like this.

I do think that his actions made him a hero because he was a smart thinker at the moment by thinking fast and wisely

I don't think that Odysseus is a hero because he lost so many men, and like almost everyone in this blog said, he did put wax on his crew member's ears but then if you look in the text it says " Odysseus decides to tell the men only of Circe's warnings about the sirens..." Leaving out warning about the Scylla. A true hero would do anything to make sure everyone is safe whether it means loosing their own life, or preparing the men everything he knows. There is so much to say. But in my own honest opinion. No, Odysseus is not a hero.

I think that he is a hero because he made heroic decisions along his journey. It was heroic of him when he told his men not to eat Helios's livestock, even thought they didn't listen to him. Odysseus was also being heroic when he took the beeswax and " laid it thick on their ears." so they wouldn't hear the sirens. Telling the crew to strap him to the mast was heroic so he wouldn't put his crew in danger.

Odysseus is, in my opinion, a hero. (A twisted one at that) He takes heed to the warning that is given to him by his newly found lover, Circe. He tells his crew of only one part of the warning and hopes that by not telling them the dangers they will face, that more of his crew, and himself, will survive. "Odysseus decides to tell the men only of Circe's warnings..."

In a way i think that Odysseus is a hero, but then in other ways i think he just wanted to say he was a hero. Although he saved his men he went back and had to tell his tale just to be admired by the king and didnt respect the fact he had a wife. Thats not what a true hero would do. But i guess he can also be considered a hero for saving his men.

In book 12, think that Odysseus actions made him a hero because Odysseus brought along wax for his crew so they could put them in their ears to protect them from the sirens and to me that shows that Odysseus is thinking about the safety of his crew and a hero would do just that.

I think that Odysseus isn't a hero. He has greed and selfishness. When he fights, he fights for what he wants and will stop at nothing to get it. he doesn't fight for the sake of other people.

Sharon S. said...

I don't believe so because if he wanted to be a hero in the first place he wouldn't have wanted to make it known that he hurt the cyclops but instead made it known it was him and told the earth shaker that if he was bad to make is journey long and him return alone

Allie Sutterer said...

Odysseus has some qualities of a hero but i dont think he could be a real hero because hes very greedy and cares too much about fame.

I dont think that makes him a hero because in the book circe says,
"Rough years then lie between you and your homecoming, alone and old, the one survivor, all companions lost." So he knew that he was going to survive no mater what and it just kinda seems like he was looking out for himself other then his crew because he would be the only surviver.

I believe that Odysseus is a hero. His actions got him where he needed to be. he lost many of men along the way yet, he made the right decision because his whole crew didn't die, only six.
