What are your thoughts regarding Act I and the Socratic discussion that ensued? Were you challenged to think? Reflect? Digest? Please respond in class today.
My thoughts about the first act are that the accelerated time scene is not very plausible because the actual events in the real story took place over months and not days.
I think that Romeo and Juliet kind of have an infatuating love. They meet and just fall in love. I mean the story is cute and romantic but the relationship between Romeo and Juliet is just blown up from what they can't have with each other.
During the Socratic seminar I thought the love felt between Romeo and Juliet was a false love at first but after developed into a strong love but the enhanced time line I thought didn't develop the love.
In the seminar today there were good things said like how he had to write to make it over a number of years. I thought this was the most important topic about this seminar.
Act 1 sort of set the basis for what was to come like foreshadowing. It also set the mood and sort of the scene that was taking place during the play. Along with the love at first sight i think it doesn't exist. i think this because it takes time to get to know somebody. For some people they might think its love at first sight but all it is is one person attracted to another with no real connections.
I think that marriage means more today than in the fourteenth century. My interpretation of marriage back then is that you have to marry someone of the same class. A lot of the times parents set up their children's marriage with someone they find suitable for them. Today it seems that men and women usually choose who they want to be with and are allowed go back on their decision. Back in the fourteenth century it didn't matter as much how the person you married suited you; now, you have a lot more choices and control on whom you choose to marry.
i think that romeo and jullet have a relationnship that is novel based because they fall in love at first sight and in real life people usualy just think that persons atrractive or somthing like that and it evetually grows into love.
I think that during the 14th century there was arranged marriages, also, today marriages mean a lot to people, where some people even wait to do certain things to wait for someone they truly care about, and they couldn't always do that then. I also think that the things that brought the two together was not necessary love at first sight, I mean Romeo just saw Juliet, he didn't know anything about her, and he hadn't even talked to Juliet before, he might have really liked her but I think that he was just really attracted to Juliet. The two people who knew about the marriage was the Nurse and the Paster. They helped out in many ways because the Nurse helped communicate what Juliet was thinking and what they were planning with each other. And the paster actually planned and married the two, and in the end of the story he actually gets the two of them into trouble, but those are the two that knew about them.
Romeo's love for Juliet and Rosaline were very different at the beginning. At the beginning when the first met, I believe that Romeo was just trying to get over Rosaline and Juliet was the way, but after I think that they do fall in love later but it seems rushed so I'm still not fully convinced that Romeo was fully in love with Juliet like he says. I think that he could've definitely grown to love her in time, but in my opinion their relationship was just so rushed.
In our socratic discussion in class we talked about marriage and what is is like today compared to back then, such as how marriages were delt with back then. We also talked about relationships toward other characters. Mercutio is not part of the Montague family but he is a friend of Romeo that the family trusts. We talked about love at first sight and if it was true or not. People expressed how they felt about love at first sight, some said it was based upon beauty maybe not on love at first sight. We talked about the Nurse and Friar Lawrence and how they kept their love a secret. I had to think about what I was going to say when I asked a question, I had to look back at my notes.
The love that romeo feels for Rosaline seemed to be a little more in-depth and true because so far in the book, romeo has only just met juliet and knows nothing about her at all, so his love for juliet seems like he's just trying to cover for his heartbreak. it isn;t really possible for love to come so quickly because romeo and juliet barely know eachother, they have barely evenn had a conversation, but i think that it was love at first sight because they were willing to die for eachother.
I think that act 1 displays how marriage in the fourteenth century was not really based on love. It was really based on the wealth of the families and the two getting married. Women couldn't choose their husband and most of the time the two getting married were complete strangers.
Act 1 was a good beginning for the play because it gives you insight for what the play is about and gets you interested in what is for coming. I am wondering why only two people knew about Romeo and Juliet's future marriage. Why wouldn't they tell their closest friends so that someone else would know so they could get help. I think that it is okay that they believe in love at first sight and that they do not care that their families do not get along. They are trying to fulfill their own desires, and not always do what their parents want. I think that it would be better if we just blogged instead of talking because it seems that most people are more comfortable with blogging over talking.
I was challenged to think because the language is so much different, and you have to get a definition for the word. The parents have more of a say on who he or she is going to marry. It basically depends on if you are wealthy, own land, or a prince or princess of another country or city. Fate is defined as, "the universal principle or ultimate agency by which the order of things is presumably prescribed; the decreed cause of events; time." Fate brought the two lovers because he was determined to go to the party and not be recognized because of the masks and he found his lover, Juliet, as he knew from the first glimpse. Next, the nurse and Pasteur were the only ones that knew about the love between Romeo and Juliet, and the nurse helped set up things for the both of them and the Pasteur married the two, which was a great help to Romeo and Juliet. Furthermore, Romeo's friend Mercutio is not part of the family, but is a good friend and he develops through the story by telling Romeo about the dream where it was about Queen Mab.
Marriage during the 14th century was not very fair because everyone was set up by their parents instead of them finding ther own true love.
Romeo's feelings for Rosiline are more personal because he probablly had gotten to know her a lot and really did care about her, so it hurt more but his feelings for Juliet was more of a sexual attraction i believe because all it took for them was to see eachother.i also believe the relationship he has with juliet so far is they are more like friends with benefits.
Well love really back then marriage was a lot different then today because they were set up with other people that their parents thought they would be good together with. The love with Rosaline was different from Juliet because Rosaline and Romeo didn't really have a thing going on and he kinda didn't want to be with her but with him and Juliet they had a connection and they wanted to be together. The two people that knew about the relationship was the nurse and the pastor. They helped by keeping everything a secret and they knew that they would be good to together and actually have a connection. He actually went the party to meet some girls and thats when he saw Juliet and for them it was like love at first sight so thats when they thought they had a connection with each other.
In this socratic seminar people said that marriage in the 14th century is different. In that century marriages were set up by your parents, It did not matter if you really loved them or not. Marriages today mean a lot more to people than back then. You get to make the choice to marry the person you love. I think that Romeo meets Juliet because of his friends, if weren't for his friends then he never would have been persuaded to go to the party because he was too depressed about Rosaline. Romeo feels a stronger connection with Juliet then he did with Rosaline. I think Rosaline was more of girl to "love" because he was desperate and he just wanted someone to love, but with Juliet he actually feels love between them with the connection they have.
Marriage did not mean so much in the 1400's, otherwise there would not be so many arranged marriages and less or no marriages at such a young age. Juliet's parents arranged for Juliet to get married at the age of 13. Today most people get married in their 20's or even older. Some do get married at the age of 18, but that is still 5 years older than Juliet. Fate brings these two lovers together at a mascaraed ball, where they cannot see each others faces and identity. If it wasn't for fate, bringing forth the occasion of the ball, then the Montagues' identity would have been discovered and they would have gotten kicked out, and Romeo and Julie would have never met. The reading and situation causes me to think: Juliet denied his kiss at first and I am forced to wonder why. But very shortly after she gave in and they kissed a couple times and "fell in love."
I personally think that people and teens should be able to choose whom they marry but at the same time the parent should also be able to put some input in to the marriage. Also, I think Romeo was "stupid" because of how he fell in love at first sight and how Romeo was kind of going off looks.
In Act 1 and in the Socratic discussion really showed how crazy it was for Romeo and Juliet met. They met at a Capulet party that Romeo was not invited let alone wanted there. He saw Juliet and...love at first sight. Is there such thing as this thought? I think it might not be love at first sight, but when you see someone with a strong connection as they had it was fate to find each other. The whole event that took place the night Romeo and Juliet met really started off the whole story. It showed family background and relationships between everyone. So I believe that everything that happened in Act 1 will make a significant role in the rest of the play.
they have a very interesting love. it is forbidden yet they still are in love. even though they just meet they both think that they are in love. in the begining of their relationship romeo uses Juliet as a fall back and then he begins to love her.
i personally don't believe in love at first sight but i do believe that one could be attracted to another person at first sight. but to truly love someone you would have to know them because looks aren't everything. i think Romeo is too into looks when he likes a girl. although i do believe that he truly loves Juliet eventually after he knows her, his first intentions seem superficial.
The marriages in the 14th century where mostly arranged by the parents based on what the other persons background is.
I personal Romeos love for Rosalind was more of a little fling, when romeos love for juliet was pure infatuation. And it was love at first sight for both of them.
I think that fate had alot to do with how Romeo and Juliet came together. I think fate made juliets parents want her to marry the prince, so she would be vulnerable for romeo to come in and sweep her off her feet. I also think fate made romeo vulnerably so he would be able to fall in love with juliet.
Act 1`was a great start for th e play, i think that this act really provided the foundation that the play needed.v
Thea accelerated time scheme definitely effects that way that the characters can relate to each other and how their love is blooming much faster than a normal relationship would. It really is blurring the line between blind love and forced love. Romeo and Juliet cannot help that they feel this way about one another, even though some readers may think that they are rushing into things too fast and their love is completely unrealistic, Romeo and Juliet seem to be the embodiment of more than love, but human independence, and a connection so deep that fate is favoring it. Act 1 was obviously the introduction to this story, but it gave us a lot more insight into how things will obviously unfold. It's almost as if they have already told us the story, but left all the details out. Romeo and Juliet will obviously engage in a forbidden love, but this story still leaves the unsolved mystery of how they have come to engage in that forbidden love.
As much as I love confusing text and 14th century literature, I think that the play of Romeo and Juliet is a bit scary, suicides, murders etc. I don't know about any one else, but I think that the Italians in this book are creepers. Romeo seems like the stalker type to me and the two families want to kill each other. A twenty year old asked for a fourteen year olds hand in marriage, and she goes for a seventeen year old instead. Just saying.
