Over the summer, you were asked to read at least two novels of your choice.
1) Briefly tell me what you read, including the titles and authors.
2) I want to know what you liked about the books, what you learned and, more importantly, what matters to you about the book's content.
*Make sure to adhere to proper conventions and proofread your response. If, for some reason, you did not read two novels, tell me about two novels you have read and answer the above. This blog post must be completed by 2:30p.m. on Friday, August 20th, 2010.

Hi.
The first book i read was the Pearl by John Stienback. This book is about a poor diver in a poor country that finds the perfect pearl that is worth great riches. He lives with his wife and their baby. The pearl is supposed to be some great thing but it ends up with some consequences too. The second book that I read was Lord of the Flies by William Golding. This book is about some boys that get in a plane wreck and end up on an island and it shows the true nature of man.
1)
The first book I read was Sundays at Tiffany’s by James Patterson. It's about a little 8 year old girl whose imaginary friend leaves her when she turns 9. Then 23 years later they recognize each other and start hanging out. The rest of the book is about how she still remembers him (even though she shouldn't) and them falling in love. The second book I read was Wanted by Sara Shepard (the last book in the Pretty Little Liar series). It was about finally figuring out what happened to these girls best friend after she disappeared and then found her body. This book also answers all the questions you have from the rest of the books.

For my first book I read I didn't really like the way it was written. I like more fast paced books and this one just seemed to have too much unnecessary detail in it. Then for my second book I really liked it. I like the way Sara writes her books. She makes them very fast and easy to read. Also when see writes she is writing to show the author the image instead of telling it (if that makes any sense).
The first book I read was Soldiers Heart by Gary Paulsen. This book is about a 15 year old boy who wants to join the military, so he lies about his age and enrolls. Once in the military he learns that its not as great as he expected and wanted to go home, but he couldn't he had to stay and fight. In the end of the story he dies. I liked the book because it had a good message.
The second book i read was Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen. This book is about a boy named Brian who gets stranded in the woods and has to survive the winter. This is a challenge for Brian because he has never been stranded during winter and have to survive. I liked this book because it made me think about all that i have that some people don't.
The first book I read was The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. It is about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins. He is a hobbit and Gandalf and some dwarves come to his house and convince him to go on a quest to retrieve treasures stolen by a dragon.
The next book I read was The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks which is #2 in the series. Wil Ohmsford has to protect the girl Amberle on a quest to save the Ellcrys. The Ellcrys is a tree that holds back hordes upon hordes of demons behind the Forbidding. the problem is that it is dying and has to be saved or the Four Lands will be eliminated.
over summer i re-read the book world war z by max brooks. its a book about the zombie apocalypse.
The first book i read was Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. It was a novel about "elsewhere" a place where people go when they die and age backwards. Then, when they are a baby they are sent down the river back to earth and they are born again. I thought it was a really interesting concept.
The second book i read was Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler. It was about two best friends that went to California for the summer looking to meet 20 boys. I thought it was a really good good book to read in the summer being a summer novel. It captured the mood of summer :)
2) I liked the interesting settings of my books. in the Lord of the Flies the setting is a mysterious island that supposedly has a strange beast dwelling within it. The setting of the Pearl is a poor country (it doesn't specify) near the ocean. I learned man's true nature in Lord of the Flies and I learned with great wealth comes great responsibility in the Pearl. What matters most to me is the lesson books teach you.
The first book I read was The Ranger's Apprentice:The Kings of Clonmel By John Flanagan. The second one I read was Stoneheart, By Charlie Fletcher. I personal liked The Rangers Apprentice because it is more about myths and things like that.
1) The first book I read was Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. This was about a girl, Tally, who couldn’t wait till she was sixteen so she could be a ‘pretty’ and not an ‘ugly’ any more. She was the only one out of her friends that didn’t have the operation. A lot changed and then she had an inner battle with herself to do what’s right or what’s not. The second book I read was The Da Vinci code by Dan Brown. It was about a man accused of murder that was left a trail of codes, by the murdered victim. He has to follow it to see how he will live his life, behind bars or a free man.
2) The books were spectacular. The first was of a girl realizing what’s happening in the world, just as a lot of others in real life. It shows how most girls, and some guys, feel if someone is average they are ugly. That to succeed how must be beautiful. Then there is how cosmetic surgery changes the way you are, mostly. Even though in the book it’s a tumor, it can just be the new self-esteem or the new look.Which can be good, but not always. The next book was just and addicting thriller, which included tons of facts. It matters a lot to see how other people think, see things, and act. The mystery and the codes all made me think deeper into what some ideas could really mean.
Over the summer I read the books "Guilty Pleasures" by Laurell K. Hamilton and "Lover Awakened" by J. R. Ward. Both of them being fantasy fiction.
In "Guilty Pleasures" is about a vampire slayer and Animationist named Anita Blake. Her job is to basically raise zombies and kill vampires with a warrant. But the farther she gets in the vampire world the more danger she's in. She faces death many times through out the book. The main part of the book is when she kills the master vampire. I liked this book because it stayed with one character through the whole thing and Hamilton used a lot of specific details to grab the reader's attention. While reading this series I’ve really come to understand how well details and specifics grab the reader. Everything that Anita goes through in the book really seems to go over the idea that no matter how hard or good you are at you're job, it always shows you challenges
"Lover Awakened" was my favorite of the two books. It's part of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. The vampires live in secret and are at war with the "lesser" or the "undead". They’re basically humans with no heart and black blood. In this book one of the brothers has fallen in love. But she's a civilian that was taken and tortured by a lesser. The brother Zsadist falls in love with Bella. He goes through everything just to get her back from the lesser. When he does get her back though, she’s not in a great condition. Which leads up to Zsadist killing the lesser that took her. I liked how J. R. Ward used multiple different perspectives for each character. I learned that by using each character thought in the book to get the different perspective is a great way to write. It doesn’t make you wonder what the other characters are thinking.
The two books I read this summer were Skin by Adrienne Maria Vrettos, and Dead Connection by Charlie Price. They were both really well written books. Skin, is about a boy named Donnie, who has parents that fight all the time and his sister, Karen's anorexia. His sister meets a really nice girl from Chicago that just moved in right across the street, which becomes a fun summer to remember for all of them. Later on, Donnie's father left his family to live by himself for awhile, and visited rarely. Karen's eating disorder got worse, and she eventually lost her battle with it. Donnie's father moved back in, and the family's rocky relationship was tamed. Dead Connection is about a boy who spends his free time at the local cemetery and talks to dead people to give them company. Further into the book, he starts to hear a faint muffle of a new voice coming from a grave stone. He feels scared about approaching it but later does. He thinks that the voice is of the cheerleader at the local high school who got murdered and wasn't buried in the right tombstone. The daughter of the cemetery owner was curious about the boy and later befriended him. The story also his the points of view from a detective, a mental man, and an alcoholic man. It has an ending that you can't really conclude whether the girl was buried under the wrong tombstone or not.
I liked how in the book Skin, it made me feel the real pain Donnie had for dealing with his parents dysfunctional relationship with each other and his sister's anorexia. It really made me want to throw the book at a wall because the parents really made me mad. I liked how in Dead Connection, it gave the sides of the story for the detective, the boy, the mental man, and the alcoholic. To me, they made trying to figure out the murder case more interesting.
The one of the two books i read this summer was "I Am Legend". The plot of the story was about a man named Robert Neville and how he was the last man immune to a unknown virus that spread to Compton L.A. The virus was contagious and made the host into vampires and Robert Neville wanted to cure this virus so he can be a hero and save everyone in L.A. The other book i read this summer was "Lord of the flies" the climax of the story was about how these little boys are trying to live on a island being survivors and create a civilized society and that never worked out.
The first book I read this summer was "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks. This book is a story about a summer romance. It goes through a lot of ups and downs throughout it. They both find other companions, but one visit brings them back together for the rest of their lives. This books has so many lessons and morals. The second book I read was "Cut" by Patricia Mccormick. Its about a girl who has some issues in her life and is sent to a treatment hospitalfor the bad way she handles her stress. This book isn't for everyone. It is kind of graphic and tough to read at some points, but it's a very good book that keeps you guessing till the end. I loved both the books I read this summer and I highly suggest reading them!
The first book i read was Heartless by Sara Shepard, it was the second to last book in the series. its all about 5 best friends and when the leader of their clique dies they all fall apart, even though they were best friends neither one know about the others secrets, except their clique leader which is dead. but now that shes dead they asll recieve text messages, ims, notes, letters in the mail, about their secrets and if they dont do as "A"(mystery person, the leaders name was alison, so they think its her ghost sending them messages) says then they will be dead just like their alpha leader.
The second book i read was Lock and Key by Sara Dessen. the book is about a girl( shes 17) who lives with her mother in a run down place. then one day her mom leaves her, she lives months alone until one day the owners find her in a "unlivable condition" so she moves in with her sister whom she hasnt seen in years, now she has to learn that is it always good to live independently or is it sometimes okay to let others help you through?
i absolutly love these two books, and the authors. The reason is that they are fast paced, dont have too much detail that bores you to death. i cant handle slow paced books because then its so slow that i forget what even happened. both books had really meaningfull messages, for example in Lock and Key , is it okay to sometimes let others help you instead of keeping it in yourself? or should you keep everything to yourself and wonder what happened
The first book I read was King Dork by Frank Portman. The book focuses on Tom Hendersons struggle to make it through his junior year of high school. He stumbles across a bunch of his dead fathers books. Inside one of the book includes a secret code and throughout the book it shows Tom decoding the book and also about his non existing social life. What I liked about this book was that it was well written and that it could feel as if you were there. What I learned and what stands out in this book is that no matter who you are you can always be yourself and that you can always make friends by being yourself.
The second book I read was Breakfast of Champion by Kurt Vonnegut. This is a book about a sci-fi author named Kilgore Trout who travels to Midland City for an arts festival. Kilgore Trout runs into Dwayne Hoove, Dwyane is looking for a "message" and think that Kilgores book is. Dwayne ends up going on a rampage because the book says that all men are machines. I liked the writing in this book, and the general message. What spoke out was how it claims all humans are robots and that their are different kind of robots. All in all it was a very strange book but very well writen.

The first book I read was the Lightning Theif by Rick Riordan This story was about a boy named Percy Jackson who was both part god and human these people are called demigods. The god of the sky Zues believes that Percy has stolen his ultimate weapon the lighting bolt. Percy must prove his innocense by the soltice to avoid a war between the gods.
The second book I read was the 2nd book of the series called the Sea of Monsters in this book Percy and the other demigods are in trouble the camp which they were protected by a magical tree is no longer able to keep monsters out. Someone poisioned the tree. Percy must find a cure for the posion before it is to late. To get the cure he and his allies must sail through the sea of monsters (The delta Triangle) which will be no easy task. If he is to fail there will be no place which Halfbloods will be safe.
The first book I read this summer was Pulling Weeds to Picking Stocks: The Adolescent Millionaire by the Beatty Boys. This book goes in depth about the steps and skills of taking care of your money. It was written by three brothers who invested their money in the stock market, which was made by mowing lawns and other miscellaneous jobs. I read this book because I mow lawns to make money therefore it relates to me. The part that I liked the most about this book was how it was written from a kid’s point of view. What I learned was how to better invest my money. For example I should put my money into companies that make or sell products that can be used in many different ways. Oil for example can be used 136 different ways.
The second book I read was Brian’s Return by Gary Paulsen. This book talks about how Brian, the main character, returns to the Canadian wilderness where he survived a plane crash and lived there for 54 days. Brian goes to the Canadian wilderness by canoeing down chains of lakes. What I liked most about the book was the survival type feel of the book. I learned more about how to survive in the wilderness. For example returning to a place where you have had a traumatic event can sometimes be a good thing.

I read "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks. I chose this book because I'm a huge fan of the movie. I'm not much of a reader, but I finished this book in three days! This novel was a romance, & I can't say it was better than the movie, it was about the same. I would read this book again.
The first book i read this summer was Where the Red Fern Grows By Wilson Rawls. This book is about a boy who bought two hunting dogs and teaches them to hunt as there growing up. He took them to hunting compettions and the dogs won many of them. Then the dogs chyased a mountain lion and one of the dogs got cut open and was dying then the other dog got deprssed and refused to eat and died when the boy came back to where he buried the dogs a red fern had grown over the burial place of the dogs.
The second book I read was Call of THe Wild By jack london. In this book a dog gets taken from his home and beaten to turn into a sled dog. Its about survival friendship and finding out about himself.
The girst and only book I read was Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden this book is about 99 elite soilders that are trapped the middle of a hostile city surrounded by hundreds of enemy gun men.
Dear Mr. Trotter,
Sorry my post is late but i did not have access computer in Wisconsin. The first book i read was Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. It was an emotional story of a young man in the circus and what he witnesses and a trainer/ vet. for the small akward circus. The other book i read was The Girl Who Stoped Swimming by Joshilyn Jackson. Its about Laurel who sees ghost such as her Uncle Marty. Then her daughters friend, Molly, mysteriously drowns in her backyard pool at night and she starts seeing the ghosts of Molly and she needs her crazy, outgoing sister, Thalia to help her solve this "accident". In both books, i enjoyed how colorful and immersing they were. They were both well writen and very easy to follow. Water for Elephants, The first book, was a slightly disturbing and had a dark edgy-ness to it that was different then the conflicting horror of The Girl Who Stopped swimming.
The first book i read was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This book is about a shepherd boy who has a dream about finding finding a treasure at the pyramids of Egypt. During his adventure he meets a bunch of characters and learns a lot about life and the world.
My first book of choosing was Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradely. This book basicly described the brutallity of war as did my second book black hawk down by Mark Bowden. The main differences in these two novels were the time periods and the places.
The first book that i read was War of The Worlds by H G Wells the books setting starts in a small town in England South west of London. After the first cylinder like object hit ground the narrator is one of the first people to discover the cylinder. After a while the Martians emerge looking like bear size octopus monsters, but they where unable to cope with the earths atmosphere so they quickly retreat back inside the cylinder. One man steps toward the cylinder and suddenly gets vaporized but the alien heat ray. After the first attack the narrator takes his wife to a relatives house to keeps safe. after that a lot more aliens start to land and one finally cuts the narrator off from his wife. After a while the man takes refuge in a ruined building while the Martian red weed(vegetation)spread quickly. After finding no reason to live the man runs straight at the martians only to find that they along with the red weed have died from a bacteria. After this shocking discovery the man finally comes to the conclusion that now he has a reason to live and that is to help rebuild the human economy.
In the first book, Flags of Our Fathers, it described the loss of many soilders during the battle on iwo jima. i found out that iwo jima means vulcano of sulfer. and the authors' dad survived, but would never discuss this brutallity. In the second book Black Hawk Down, the weapons evolved so the violence was much stronger but not as many americans lives were lost. The most memorable part in the story was when one of the copters crashed and a young man named Mike Durant defended his posistion untill hundreds of somalians stormed him, broke his nose, and took him captive. he later was killed when he tried to escape and his unstable led collapsed and somalians shot him down.
I read Harry Potter and the Half blood prince By JK Rowling. I like all the harry potter books because they pull you in and make you want to read more!Harry advances in his schooling at Hogwarts and is now in year six at the school of magic. him and his friends are not only dealing with more academic and family problems but social as well. In the book, Harry finds this annotated spell book that gives him helpful tips to succeed in school that is signed the Half Blood Prince. He uses the book to his advantage and never finds out who the book belongs to until the end. He has to face more of his fears and deal with voldemort once more by trying to figure out how to destroy him! The book leaves you thinking about how he will find all seven whore-cruxes in the next and final book in the Harry Potter series!!
The first book i read was the Lone Surrvivor by Marcus Luttrell. This is a true story about how a band of brothers come together to fight the Taliban. These men are Navy Seals which is a special combat force. This book is all about there journey together. But sadly these brave men incounter many problems along the way and many obstacles stood in their way.
The second book i read was Robinson Crusoe. This is a book about how a man is stranded on an island. He encounters many problems along the way like savages on the island and much more.
What i liked about both of these books was that there was a lot of detail in them. I also could visualize what was happening as i read. I learned that war is terrible and people that fight like the Navy Seals did are very brave men and women!
The first book i read was the hunger games by suzane collins. This book was about a poor girl who lived in a holocaust of times after the world was at war and then the country was seperated into i believe 12 colonies, and then the games where set up with a person from each colony and basically they had to all fight to the death, but at the end the girl and the boy end up living wen only one person is supposed to win. It was a great book mostly because i really conected with it because i am into hunting and i am also into fighting and those kinds of things so the book was a thrill ride to my imagination and kept me occupied for around a week haha but it was definatly a good book
oh jabbathegut is dante
The first book I read was Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. I really enjoyed it because the story was amazing and powerful. It makes you appreciate your life. The second book I read was Princess in Love by Meg Cabot. This book was good because their is a lot of romance and the writing is really good. The author has a sense of humor in the book.
