"The Simpsons", Satire, and "The Odyssey?"

Compare The Odyssey video excerpt from the Simpsons with Homer's epic poem The Odyssey Books 9,10,12,21,22,23. What does the Simpson's version satirize? What does it make you think about regarding the poem's characters, theme, relationships, and episodes? Please respond with specific support (i.e.-quotations) for your argument.

The Simpsons video and the odyssey connect because it shows the selfish acts of Odysseus by him eating his friends. It also shows that how he left his wife for so long without her knowing where he was. In the video when circe has his friends drink out her coldren to get them to turn into pigs then have him eat him it shoes how she minipulated them.

In the Simpsons video, they display the foolish traits of Odysseus at an exaggerated level. When the crew drinks the drinnk that turns them into pigs, the drink looks like a disgusting green poison, making fun of how stupid the men must of been to drink something that harmful. When Homer/Odysseus eats his men, it symbolized how his actions and triumphs cost the lives of all his men and how it was directly Odysseus' fault.

the only way that you can compare the two is the basic story line. Other wise there is really no comparison.

In the Simpson's satire of the odyssey, it briefly showed Odysseus' journey from the book. But when Homer, who is Odysseus, eats his friends when they were turned into pigs, shows how selfish Odysseus really was, but they try to show that in a funny way so it doesn't seem that bad. All of the regular Simpson's characters play a role in the Odyssey which gives the Odyssey a satirical feel to it.

i think that this movie was some what of a exact representation of the books and that it really represented the way odyseous acted in the books.

The Simpsons is kind of making fun of Odysseus and his journey such as when he sees the sirens and when he eats his men in the Simpsons its just like how Odysseus's journey causes most all of his men to die in horrible ways. They also make fun of the gods and also they show the sutors that are waiting for Odysseus's wife to marry one of them. but then he comes home after twenty years and comes back as a different looking person

The video connects to the odyssey because it shows the the selfishness and curiosity of Odysseus. It also show how the gods cursed him after all his mistakes.

The Simpsons version of the Odyssey makes all the characters especially Odysseus seem like idiots and the Simpsons version also cuts out a lot of things that happened in the original version such as the Cyclopes. The original is more detailed and has much more story and character development.

The Simpsons satire greatly emphasizes the stupid choices he made, like eating the pigs who were his friends (even though in the real thing they weren't eaten. It also emphasizes the stupidity of the crew, like going and following the sirens' song, and drinking from the cauldron even though there were skeletons around it.

The video was very comical but had some of the things the original. But the Simpson's version was very interesting and didn't make much sense. the story line was off. But it is a cartoon so of course it isn't accurate.

They're similar because the Simpsons version covered the main points of the poem and shows how people were trying to court Odysseus' wife Penelope while he was gone. However it doesn't go into depth and isn't very accurate about the events.

It shows how Simpson is stupid or clumsy. This is relating to how is the actual story, the leader was or could be looked at as stupid. This tells me that the writer of this showing, doesn't like Odysseus. An example of him being "stupid", is when he eats all of his friends.

The Simpsons episode is based on the story of Odysseus, just with humor. Penelope misses Odysseus and there are other men in the kingdom trying to show their worthiness to her. When Odysseus finally returns home and he said to Penelope, "I am going to do something I haven't done in awhile, take out the trash." And then he kills all the other men in Odysseus' kingdom, referring to the men as trash. this is much like what Odysseus does when he returns home in the book, he kills men using a bow and arrow. They have similar themes, mostly based around homecoming.

The Odyssey and The Simpson's have some similarities but for the most part the clip is just making fun of the Odyssey. In both the Odyssey and the Simpson's they resemble bad leaders, Odysseus uncaring of his men and Homer eating his men that were pigs. But when they say, "do they give every weirdo an island now?" Is not something that would be actually said in the Odyssey.s

The Simpson's made this satire about the books The Odyssey. The characters in the Simpson's show the funnier side of it, about drinking the liquid from her cauldron. The Simpson's illustrates parts from the book such as killing all the other men wanting Penelope, and also his men turning into swine. The theme for the books and movie are the same.

I think it is interesting how they portray Odysseus in the Simpsons. I think it is funny the way they make fun of the Odyssey. they add more humor to the story of Oddysey

The Simpson's video and the Odyssey are the same in some ways.T he Simpson's video has satire in it compared to the Odyssey. Because it is the Simpson's, it makes fun of the Odyssey a little bit, and makes it funny and not so serious. Although, Odysseus in both of them kind of resemble a bad leader because they both seem like they dont care, like when he eats the pigs in the video that are actually his friends. In the video he shows disrespect to people like Circe, and that is nothing that Odysseus is like in the book. In the video he asks, "do they give every weirdo and island now?" which is something that Odysseus wouldn't say. The video just makes it fun and not as realistic

The Simpsons video clip represented The Odyssey in a nutshell. Homer represented how selfish Odysseus was. For example, when he ate his friends as pigs it illustrated his selfishness in a comedic way. All of the characters corresponded with characters in the Odyssey portraying it in a satirical form.

I think they compared pretty hilariously. It gave me another perspective on the odyssey. I like how they compared the two different sirens. The odysseys were enchanting but the simpsons where gross so I thought it was funny how they did that.

Well instead of the crew having to be tide down when going past the sirens instead they went straight at them only to run away because how ugly they were. Then when circus turned them into pigs homer ate them.

The Simpsons and the books of Odysseus have the same meaning because Odysseus was careless while in both the books and the episode by coming home with only him alive. Some of the story line of Odysseus was not shown in the show.

The Simpsons is quite ironic because it is pretty much the oppoosite of The Odyssey. In the video, it shows Homer eating his own shipmates, which is showing how he wasted some of his men by going by Selia who ate six of his men. It also shows the Sirens who do not look as some people might have imagined them, proving that it was not that hard to get by them, which is the exact opposite of The Odyssey. The Simpsons has a lot of satire in it.

The Simpsons video is making fun of the Odyssey because the show is saying that odysseus made selfish decisons. He was eating his friends and leading them into dangerous situations. Also he left his wife without ever returning back.

Satire is shown in the short segment that we watched. It showed how selfish Odysseus is, shown by him eating his friends. He reacted in a manner that it didn't matter and a "who cares" characteristic. When the 'sirens' are shown it also pokes fun of the odyssey, in a humorous way.

In the book the Odyssey its a story about a journey that took 20 years to complete and about the challenges Odysseus had to complete.Such as the cyclopes' den or Circe's island,in the Simpson version it is a joke, how ever it shows the sirens and Circe's island and how she turned his men to swine.I think that the Simpson version is no where near the original poem.

The Odyssey video excerpt from the Simpsons shows the foolishness of some of Odysseus decisions through how he eats his friends, causing their death. And it makes fun of the Sirens because in the book they are supposed to be beautiful and luring and they are not in the video.
