"The Simpsons", Satire, And "The Odyssey?"

Compare The Odyssey video excerpt from the Simpsons with Homer's epic poem The Odyssey Books 9,10,12,22,23. What does the Simpson's version satirize? What does it make you think about regarding the poem's characters, theme, relationships, and episodes? Please respond with specific support (i.e.-quotations) for your argument.

The Simpson's version satirize the the journey of Odysseus, the Simpson's also satirize the "monsters" and what they did to Odysseus and his crew for example the cirens and their song. The video makes me think about how Odysseus wasn't the hero he was set out to be. Odysseus and Penelope's relationship seems like they are close yet distant.

in the simpsons version of Odysyeuss
they had the simple and basic story of odysyuess and his men's quest across the seas to itheca but how they encounter foul beast and creatures of the seas and land.

This video makes one think that the characters are just a big joke along with the purpose and morals of the writing. It also influences the idea that Odysseus was a fool, and all the other characters were childish, selfish, and immature. The relationships in this movie were misunderstood also, Odysseus and his wife were very close and there was a whole dramatic scene of their expression of loyalty and love, and how Odysseus doesn't enjoy the fact he has to lose every one of his crew members (friends) in the writing where as in the video he couldn't care less that he just ate his friends and tells his wife to leave him alone and that he was going somewhere to uhm, enjoy himself. The Simpsons satirizes the importance and seriousness of the Odessy writing, and the true morals.

The Simpsons' version of the Odyssey is similar to the book but some things are different for example how the people who lured in the men made them go away and how they sand instead of saying they were in a bird suit and also it changed what happened what happened with the pigs in the book the pigs get turned back into men and in the simpsons episode the men/pigs get eaten by homer

The Simpsons episode based on "The Odyssey" satirizes the relationship between Penelope and Odysseus when he returns. In the Simpsons he comes home and said that he is going somewhere, wile in the book they talk to each other and recollect about what happened to them. They also make the Sirens look ugly and offending in the episode when in the book they were written as beautiful and enchanting. In the episode you see the gods flicking the boat to Circe and this is referring to when Odysseus blinds Neptune's son and send him on a journey all across the sea. There is a part in the episode where Circe turns all of Homer's men into pigs like the book. Also there is a part where Odysseus must travel through the underworld.

The Simpson excerpt of the Odyssey was way different then the Odyssey books. In the Simpson one Odysseus only had 4 friends on the ship and then in the books he had more then for when he went to see Circe. In the book they said Circe wasn't that pretty and in the excerpt she was really pretty. Characters were mostly all the same except for the description of them. Relationships in the excerpt and the books were different. In the excerpt he doesn't cheat on Penelope with Circe as we could see but in the books he come home and he has cheated on Penelope with Circe and other people along the way.

The simpsons takes the odysey to a whole other level, added with humor. It kind of exaggerated the real book, but in its own funny way. It did provide real things from the book, and along with it its own sort of comedy. But they were both accurate, just different kind of levels of enjoyment. I would prefer the simpson one over the book any day, but the book provides you with more depth into the odyssey and odysseus's adventure.

The Simpson's story was actually somewhat accurate to the Odyssey. In the Simpson's the main character and his crew got away from the ugly creatures the drew them towards the Islands. Also in the Simpson's as well as the Odyssey the Gods are against the main character. Finally in both the tales the wife accepts the hero when he come home. While the Simpson's wasn't quite the same it slightly resembled the Odyssey with a sense of humor along with it.

I think that the Simpsons episode of Odysseus' adventures helped me understand the whole journey mote clearly in my mind. Now, when I hear or read about it again, I will have a visual aid to help me understand it better and relate to it.

The simpsons episode of the Odyssey had much less and completely left out the part with Scylla and the whorl pool. this version showed to me how much Odysseus focused on himself and his needs before anything. the theme of the simpsons version is much less violent an dis clearly meant for humor like when they see the sirens and turn around or when the gods flick the boat and then laugh. another thing that the episode got wrong was how he got the intruders out of his house and he didnt dress up as a peseant in this one.

In "The Simpsons" version of the Odyssey humor plays a bigger role but they still stick with the same plot of Odysseus' journey with his friends. For example when they get to the island and the other men turn into pigs the cartoon creates more a humorous take on Odysseus' devouring his friends.

The Simpson Satire of the Odyssey, portrayed many of Odysseuses adventures that we read about in the book. The Simpsons sitirized the slight cowarldy adventures of him and his men venturing to attack Sylla by making the Sirens be beautiful ladies. They also hyperbolized the fact that Odysseus was gone so long from his fellow wife. The wife acually began searching around for other suiters, which contrasts what really happened, when Odysseus had an affair with Circe.

"The Simpsons" is a very sarcastic video clip. It takes the events from "The Odyssey" and makes fun of them. For example in "The Odyssey" the Sirens are monstrous creatures that lure you in with their beautiful voices. In "The Simpsons" they are Marge's sisters, they have hairy legs, and are smoking.

I think that The Simpsons version of The Odyssey satirizes the heroic action of Odysseus and makes them instead these acts of foolishness and stupidity. One example is instead of homer being this buff manly man, he was over-weight. They try to fill the story with funny bits instead of serious bits. Another example is when Homer has to travel through hell, but instead of it being like what most of us think of, it is a river with a band playing instead, because that is funny.

The story explains how Odysseus is a joke and every character was made fun of some how.

The Simpsons Odysseus skit was pretty close to what actually happened. except for that Odysseus didn't lose all his men at Circes island. Also, they played on how they saw the sirens. Because Odysseus and his crew never saw the Sirens. Plus they went to circes island before they passed the Sirens. Finally, Odysseus didn't kill all the men by himself.

In the video excerpt from the Simpsons with Homers epic poem "The Odyssey" books 9, 10, 12, 22, 23, It satirizes the Challenges that Odysseus had to face on his journey home. Odysseus had to fight to live, where as in the clip, they just sailed from island to island. When Odysseus' men got turned into pigs, he did not eat them, but got them turned back into humans. This makes me think that Odysseus was really the only clever one on the journey, and that he was the bravest.

This video is just a very simple way of telling the story of when Odyssues was sent to circe island and his friends died. In this version Odysseus eats his friends but in both versions his friends are turned into pigs

In the odyssey books it actually tells all the real facts and stuff that had happened, where as in the Simpson's version they tried to make sure that they got the storyline right but added a little humor to it so that people watching the show wouldn't get bored and turn it off, and that they would actually pay attention to the storyline and what they were watching.

The Simpsons' version of the odyssey, while conveying the main story line, is hardly factually accurate. in the real version of the odyssey the main character finds himself near the island of the sprites before he meets Circe, and actually finds the sirens mildly attractive (at least) rather than absolutely being repulsed by them. Rather than getting flicked by Poseidon's finger across a map; they are drawn off course by weather inflicted by Poseidon.

The Simson's version satirize the whole journey of Odysseus. In the movie the monsters are also satirized. For example the Sirens in the true Odyssey book are beautiful bird things that sing a short boring song, but allude the men from normalcy. In the movie the men hear the song and are expecting some hot babe but it ends up being ugly freeks. The video makes me think how Odysseus really wasnt in the right mind to be a hero.

In "The Simpsons" movie clip, they re-enact the story "The Odyssey", but instead of redoing the entire play they shortened it and made it more comical. For instance, when the crew arrived at the island of sirens instead of them being attracted to the sirens they were repulsed by them. Also when he arrived at Circe's island instead of saving his friends, after they turned into pigs, he ate them. This clip allows us to have a quick, easy, and humorous summary of the Odyssey and also makes learning about "The Odyssey" more exciting and fun.

The Simpsons I think although funny really demoted Odysseus. Homer made him seem like not a hero at all and a bad leader. Which he could be better. Also made all the characters in t he book look bad because the way they act is nothing like they would usually do. Although this is pretty close to what happened they really just demoted it. First of all he didn't lose all of his men at Circe's island and when they saw the sirens it was different. Also he wasn't long for that long.

In this video it explains how Odysseous and his men went on there journey and what struggles they went through. It also illustrated the compassion of of his wife and Odysseous when he finally came home. The book and the movie had similarities like how Odysseous had to fight to stay alive.

The Simpsons episode was some what related to the Odyssey with what the "Monsters" had done to the crew and Odysseus. It also showed how when the Odysseus and the crew would get close to home they were always pushed away and sent somewhere else. When Simpson was going through the lake he showed his true emotions and how he felt being so far away from Penelope. When he returned home Penelope was angry that Odysseus was gone for so long but all in all she was forgiving.
