As I understood, the whole point of the story was that ego was something that would lead to issues down the road. This contrasts immensely with Anthem, which declares that ego is something to hold sacred and important in making an identity. The Odyssey finds that Odysseus declaring himself is what sets him off to have such a long, difficult journey. It is what hurts him. Equality, however, is set free when he declares his identity.
The Odyssey represents the normal troubles everyone goes through on a larger scale. Many consider Odysseus to by very human and relatable. Odysseus is a hero. He realized during his journey that life with all it's suffering is worth living. All of Odysseus's men were killed. He is forced to make many stressful choices. When Odysseus finally got back to his home he acted as a beggar. After 20 years, Odysseus and his family finally found each other.
The odyssey is a specific story but entails any great journey with much danger and much reward. Such as the spacecraft named "Odyssey" meaning that it is going on a great voyage with much danger. The Odyssey must be a great story with a hero being tested. This story can be an allegory for our lives, displaying the trials and troubles we must face. Odesius must deal through these tests though he prevails. Odesious must face many trials but proves his worthiness and strength. Odesius discovers the value of life and that the rewards are far greater than the struggles. Odesius finally makes it home and reunites with his wife and lives out his life.
I think that Odysseus could have made it back to his home much faster if he had tried his best to not be so ignorant. He shouldn’t have taunted the cyclops because it ended up striking him back in the long run. I understand in the moment that he would want to flaunt his name out at the cyclops. He made bad decisions on circe’s island which also resulted in his crew being turned into pigs. Once he finally is able to get home he makes a good decision to disguise himself so he is able to win his kingdom back. I think this is a great story because it shows that through all the trials and tribulations that Odysseus faced, he still was able to persevere and gain what he really wanted, a life back at home.
After watching the video, I believe the Odyssey shows connections from Greeks to how we live today. English words are usually from Greek roots they all have a certain meaning, other languages are like this to. Odyssey has many adventures and experience, and the Greeks did odysseys that shaped the world.
I believe that "The Odyssey" Odysseus faces challenges that are symbolic to everyday challenges. One challenge for example is when Odysseus sails by the Syrians and is tempted to stop and see what's on the island. This can be symbolic towards temptation, like how someone might want to eat a hungry sweet, but that person is on a diet. Or how always in life we have major goals, like straight A's, or retirement. And Odysseus's major goal is to return to his wife and kingdom.
Regarding the background film about "The Odyssey" I can make some comments about what I understand in "The Odyssey". These comments include heavy greek mythology settings, impactful lessons, loaded mood and emotion, and tragic stories with powerful characters. The greek mythological setting helps me realize the time period, and meaning of strange events. I can also use the impactful lesson references to understand the connections of "The Odyssey" to events today. One example of this is a rocket taking off, which connects to the feelings of the main character, Odysseus to his journey. The mood and emotion explained in the video also helps me create empathy from myself to Odysseus and how hard his job is, especially in making decisions for his people. The tragic stories include all of these comments above. I can understand more about "The Odyssey" from the tragedy in the stories because of the hardships they had to overcome, and how the overcame them. I would only argue that they add more detail in the video about characterization, and give more information about what happened in the character's pasts. In conclusion, this background film helps me make several comments to understand more about the mythical story "The Odyssey".
Regarding the background fils about The Odyssey, the comments that I can make about the video are that Odysseus was not wanting to complete his journey without learning something and valuing something that happened along the journey. He also learns that even though you might need to pay a small price, it is the correct thing to do if it means success not just for you, but for the people you are with. In this video, the comments that are made are that when Odysseus was disguised as a beggar, strung the bow, and shot it through the axes, you could see what he was trying to accomplish and see what he was willing to go through to accomplish this task.
Looking back on the video we watched in class, it was called "The Odyssey" this video explained that we have adapted many things from a long time ago like the Greek Mythology. We were able to adapt the calendar, and many words that goes with Greek Mythology. Some examples of what we’ve adapted was the alphabet, the new technology, and many of Greek roots and words. Even, the little things we’ve adapted from the Greek’s would still be used hundreds and thousands of years later. The Greek Gods is something that is very popular to talk about today. If it wasn’t as popular to talk about today, then wouldn’t be making this blog post.
The background film "The Odyessy," explains the mythology behind the story. Things that are mentioned through out the film are things like the various Gods, Godesses, and monsters and the stories that go with them. Odysseus started out as dort of an under dog and when he strings the bow and shoots the arrow, he proves the other men wrong. One of the main ideas in the story is that the ego of a person is very important and what people think of you is not and Odysseus does that with the bow and arrow.
From the background film about the Odyssey, I have come to understand that this book is about Odysseus' journey back home to his kingdom. Throughout his journey, he met many challenges and trials. This book can be related to us in many ways because we are all trying to achieve something. As we try to achieve this, we all have many trials, just as Odysseus on his journey. This also relates to Anthem because Equality is going through the trial of fighting the government for his rights. Through this, he meets many trials that he has to push through.
During this film about the Odyssey, I discovered some new information on what The Odyssey is exactly. The Odyssey started over a thousands years ago. This was one of the first stories of the west. Odysseus was the head of the kingdom, he was not like the others, he was strong. Odysseus and his men went on a trip that they call The Ego Trip. Ego is defined as "A persons self-esteem or self-importance's." I think that Odysseus was a independent man, just like Equality in Anthem. The book Anthem is also about Ego. On the trip, they find mystery creates, like a giant. Odysseus had to struggle a bit, he lost all his crew members. He was the only one to return home. Equality and Odysseus seem similar, they both struggle a bit,but also they are independent.
What I understand about the Odyssey is it started with a Greek hero named Odysseus. He set forth on a journey to get back to his wife but when he encounters a cyclops. The cyclops is rude and evil, he eats the heros friends. To get back at the cyclops Odysseus stabs the cyclops in the eye. This upsets the cyclops but he can not do anything. That does not mean his dad Poseidon can not. He decides to make Oydsseus's journey long and rough by destroying his ships and all crew men. Oydsseus land on an island with a women who offers him forever youth. When hearing this offer he declines. He learns he does not want this. He does not want to be forever alive. Through out Oydsseus's journey was long and full of many hard takes but it showed him that his ego did nothing for him. He needed to do anything and everything to get back to the woman of his dreams. This is where Odssey comes from. It is a journey marked by many fortunes. Oydsseus is a hero, he is no longer ego filled but he is a real hero. He has lived and understand the struggle and this makes him a true hero. He has lived a life of amazing decisions, battles, and truths. He proved he was worthy of his wife's love and the title of hero.
The Odyssey was about the Greek King of Ithaca, Odysseus. This video displayed a connection to Greek Mythology. This seems to be a story about self discovery and a remarkable journey. Odysseus went on this journey to explore for a place to call “home.” Odysseus turns out to be the only to reach home. Overall, Odyssey was an interesting video that pointed out some information I did not know about Greek Mythology.
Odyssey is the long rout home. Odysseus comes across many monsters on his way. On each of the places he discovers, many lessons. These lessons are relevant to everyone. Odysseus wasn't immortal even when it was offered to him, but the text shows how that is why he is heroic. Because he is human, we can connect more. The men he goes with parish, but he keeps surviving. Again, signs and morals are revealed in what he does.
After watching the background film about The Odyssey I can understand that this story is about the return trip of a man who wishes to be home with his wife and the things that he is familiar with. The video describes the word odyssey to be a trip filled with trials and excitements. This translates to The Odyssey because Odysseus was on a trip that was filled with trails, one that took far longer than planned for he made some mistakes along the way. One large mistake that the video outlined was when Odysseus blinded a cyclops who was the son of Poseidon, the God who made Odysseus’ return home so hard. From this point Odysseus meets many other Gods and realizes what it is to be human. I think that in The Odyssey we may see Odysseus battle with his own ego, and work towards finding himself through trials. Overall we can see that The Odyssey is a story about the trials of Odysseus’ trip back to his home in which he is forced to become the man he was meant to be from the beginning.
The Odyssey relates somewhat to Anthem by Ayn Rand. As Odysseus yells back to the Cyclops, he feels obliged to yell back his name, enraging the Cyclops and his father, Poseidon, try to stop his journey. So why would he do that? As mentioned in the film, the Greek meaning of "I" is "ego". Ayn Rand's idea of egoism is seen in Odysseus, as he needs to be know, needs to become a hero.
The background film allows me to understand that the book Odyssey is about the Greek gods and was based back in that time. It is kinda like the sword in the stone story like the girl said if someone can string this bow she will marry the guy. It is also like most story's when the least expected person pulls off the least expected person to do something hard. Odysseys was like a outcast then came and did something huge and became a hero. The story of Odyssey is like lots of story's but is different in many ways. This book sounds very interesting and can't wait to read it.
Based off of the video, you can draw the conclusion that in The Odyssey, Odysseus is arrogant about the fact that he is the king of Ithaca. While returning from the Trojan War, he encounters a cyclops who devours some of his men. As an act of revenge, he and his men blind the cyclops with a sharp stick. Because of Odysseus’ arrogance, he calls out his name. Poseidon, father of the cyclops decides to make Odysseus’ journey home to Ithaca much more difficult than it should be. In the text, Odysseus is made to seem more heroic because of the struggles he must face on his way home. In the text, the idea of morals and temptations are a constant focal point.
In the “Odyssey”, we follow the character Odysseus. He faces many choices and deadly decisions on his way home. The video discusses the theme and connections to the infamous piece of literature. They believe that the theme is that you will be faced with tough choices your entire life but you must do what is wisest. The make the connection to the Apollo 13 mission, which was extremely dangerous. They encounter so many tragedies and adventures, but Odysseus is the one who pushes through.
After watching the video called, "The Odyssey" I could relate Odesius' voyage to an everyday life. An example is that the Syrians are calling for the sailors on Odesius' ship, and the sailors have to force themselves to not listen to them, and continue on with the task. In life, there are a lot of things that could get you off track of what is really important, and this is similar to the Syrians.
The background film The Odyssey helped me to understand more about the Odyssey than what I thought I knew. I had a general understanding of the journeys of Odysseus before we watched the film but was surprised to remember that Odysseus went to Calypso's island, as I had only remembered that island from the Percy Jackson series. One of the things that made a great analogy to me was the analogy to Apollo 13. It really helped me to take something I knew about and connect it to the challenges that Odysseus faces. One thing I would have to critique about the book was the lack of explanation on Sirens. I was still confused on how Sirens work through the film but thankfully I had a little prior knowledge and my teacher was able to explain them. Overall, I really thought that this was a great background film that will help me understand the text better.
