Cyclops: Text To Film In "The Odyssey?"
What subtle or overt differences did you notice regarding the Book IX The Odyssey reading and The Odyssey film clip of the Cyclops episode? Explain, note, argue, quote, and defend. Anything regarding the Heroic Code, Guest/Host Relationship, or hubris? After watching the film clip, please respond during class.

The difference that I noticed between the two was the perspective that was taken. In the book it is from a perspective where Odysseus is the hero all the time but in the film there is a perspective from every point of view and how everybody made mistakes. For example how it wasn't just bad hosting but also how they were bad guest and how she almost served justice.
the difrence is he said nobody instead of noman and some of and how they figure out how to ecape and some the theings and a lot of things that are still there and the things of how the lached on to the sheep and the things that others do.
In the book, Odysseus says his name is noman to fool the cyclops, while in the movie, he says his name is nobody. In the movie we also seemed to experience more blood. In the book, the heroes escaped by hiding under the goats but in the movie they wore goat hide.
The difference is how it's told. In the book Odysseus wants to be the hero and take all the action but in the film he just helps out. He is very modest in the film. Another thing is that in the film they clung to the sheep to get out instead of running out with the sheep or draping the rug over to get out as feeling like a sheep.
Odysseus offers himself to the cyclops in the video, and tries to fool the cyclops. In the video, someone plays a song as the cyclops drinks the wine. In the video he says his name is nobody. Only one man gets killed in the video. A guy plays music to keep the cyclops asleep in the video. They sneak out in the video rather than all being under sheep. One man gets left behind and keeps playing music to distract the cyclops so that the rest of the man can escape.
IN the book the monster was a little more hostile and in the movie they are not as much. Odysseus has a journey about him and in the film they just lay in a cave an d have the fact that they chill. Some similarities are the eye was still poked out and they still find a way out. The sheep also left the place in a different way. In the book they went under the sheep and in the movie they left without the sheep.
Odysseus goes by nobody, instead of noman. In the book, they escape by hanging on the bottom of the sheep. In the clip, they escape on the side of the cyclops, and dodging the hands of the cyclops. In the book, Odysseus is telling the story, but in the clip, the story is being acted out.
In the book, the Cyclops seems to be far more large than the one in the video clip. Also, the video version seems to have a cyclops with hair, rather than the book. The book version never happened to describe what the object that went into the Cyclops' eye was. Another difference, was that in the book I don't remember a flute player involved with the distraction of the Cyclops. I happen to like the movie version more, because i can actually see what is all happening, and the slight language barrier in the book is sometimes hard to depict.
The difference between the to of them is that in the book the sheep and rams go out a different ways and how the men escape is they grab under the sheep and run out while in the movie they where the sheep skins so escape. Also in the movie He refers to him as nobody but in the book he is no man.
There was a very different perspective. Less dialogue. Sheep exited different in the text then is the movie. in the text the men get under the sheep for protection. In the text Odysseus offers himself up to the cyclops but in the movie he drinks from a bowl
The cyclops was a little more mean in the movie then in the book.
The technol difficulties really took away from my learning but from what I got I feel that the story chances from ear to. And in the book they sneaked out not under the ram but around and in the book they did
I noted that how odysseus and his men leave is different than in the book. I also imagined the eye of the cyclops a lot bigger than it is in the movie. He also says his name is nobody instead of no man. The play on word doesn't seem the same in this version because of this. There was also a lot more gore in the movie than the book.
There were very many differences between the movie and the book. An overt difference I notice between the book and the movie is that is the book they hid under the sheep while escaping, where as in the movie, they had sheep fur over them to help disguise them to look like the sheep. Another difference in the movie than was in the book was that Odysseus is portrayed and seen as the hero and takes control, where in the movie he is just like everybody else and just helps out.
In the movie, the Cyclops comes into the cave and block the door with a big rock. He meets with the people and then go to sleep. All of this also happens in the book. The man also says his name is nobody just like in the book. The movie does a pretty good job of being accurate, but there were a couple difference. While trying to escape in the book, they stabbed the cyclops in the eye like the movie, but then they held sheep and rams above their head while they ran out. In the movie, they covered themselves with wool as they crawled out.
In the movie they sneak out on the edge and one gets a sheep cloth, but in the book they hold on to the underside of the sheep to escape. Also in the book Odyssys says his name is noman, but in the movie he says his name is nobody.
The Odyssey film clip of the Cyclops episode was quite a bit different than the Odyssey reading, but it was a good visualization. They escaped as sheep differently in the film. The guest/host relationship seemed the same though, the cyclops was not happy and lost an eye once Odysseus was through with him, which doesn't respect the host. The hubris aspect of it was shown though; Odysseus makes sure to take credit for his trick once he leaves so he's known. It seems like Odysseus's weakness is himself as a human; he wants to take credit for what he does at the price of all of his men. It also seems like Odysseus is pretty heroic in the cyclops story, which is part of the Heroic Code. He uses cleverness and Athena's favorism to succeed, even when the gods like Poseidon are working against him.
One of the differences in the book is that the way the sheep escape is very different. in the book, the men hid under the sheep. Odysses offers him to the cyclops, but in the movie he is shown drinking instead. The movie is also told from a very different perspective.
In the book they crawl underneath the sheeps to escape but in the clip most just skip through. Also in the clip the recorder distracted the cyclops by playing and stepping away from the entrance to save the others. This did not happen in the book. The recorder didn’t exist in the book, or did not have a very significant role.
Some of the differences from the text and the video is how the men escape the cave with no sheep over their head but by seeking around and under the giants unlike the book. In the video it is being seen and the story is being played out, in the book Odysseus is explaining the story. Another difference is when the Cyclops asks for Odysseus's name he instead of saying Noman like in the book he says Nobody.
After watching The Odyssey film clip of the Cyclops episode I noticed there are many differences regarding the Book IX The Odyssey reading.In the film, the men appear to be the friendly to cyclops in the beginning rather than unkind. In the book, the men tie themselves to the sheep to escape the cave, but in the film, only one man attempted to escape as a sheep. Another difference between the film and book was the man who played to music to put the cyclops asleep. In the film a man playing music, but not in the book. Therefore, the book and film shared several differences.
In the book, Odysseus says that his name is Noman, but in the movie, he says that it is Nobody. The ways of escaping are also different, for, in the film, the people disguise themselves as sheep, but in the book, they go underneath the sheep. Also, in the book, the Cyclops is nicer to Odysseus and tells him that he will be eaten last, however, in the film, this does not happen.
The book and the movie are quite different even though they are on the same myth. Odysseus was more heroic in the book than in the movie because in the movie he just helps out take care of the cyclops. In the book they hid underneath the sheep, but in the movie they basically just ran with them.
