Shall This Pass In "Anthem?"
How would This Too Shall Pass and White Knuckles by Okay Go violate the societal norms set forth by the councils in Anthem? Looking beyond the obvious, how do the videos exhibit the antithesis of what is valued in Anthem's society?
Would Equality be pleased with Okay Go's performances, designs, and
visions for their music and art? Please include one quotation from Anthem within your response to prove your view(s). This blog response should be completed in class after we view the videos.

"This Too Shall Pass" would really violate the rules set forth by the council in "Anthem" because there is an insurmountable amount of creativity in this video. The whole obstacle course contains many colors and plenty of different objects, and just the fact that they CREATED it themselves would violate the rules in "Anthem." In the video "White Knuckles," the men are wearing all white. In the story "Anthem," Equality states that all the people in their society, "...wear all white." In this way, the two relate, yet there are still unique, from-the-norm activities happening in the video that would not be allowed in society the Equality lives in.
I feel like these people tried to put all of these things together to make them work all at once and first try. People in the video wear all white and in anthem they wear all white. The coordination in this is to on point to the fact of perfection.
the fact that they are herting themself from the past and things like that and they are trying to these pepole are being creative and that's not alowed and things lie that. there are pet and things and vary jazzy and there is alot of music
they wer doing thes things as a group witch is good and the fact that tehy are there and doing the thigs and other pepole and thats what my thoghts were
They make it a lot more complicated and precise than it has to be. It's not something you would normally see everyday. Everything is pretty even and equal in both these videos and in anthem. It was obviously practiced and taught over and over again like the society.
I think the council vales simplicity and this is a really complicated system to do one small task. Towards the end it get super chaotic. In this is all creativity and the council probably wouldn't want to allow that amount of freedom.
All of the contraptions would seem far too advanced to the council. The council enjoys the plain and simple way of doing things, but the video made a chain of reactions to complete things. Equality would love that they made all of these creative contraptions to make new things happen. He also would enjoy the creative use of dogs and props. “How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers?” (Rand 71). The council didn’t like that Equality created something that other people didn’t think of as well.
The rules differ because everything was random and out of order. In anthem everything is in order. Its the same because everyone works together to accomplish. The withe knuckles video is different because there is no fun or smiles in the city. It is the same because everyone where white, and everyone works together.
In "this too shall not pass" it relates to anthem because it represents the ripple effect of disobeying in a world where disobeying is punished with death or physical punishment. When the main character disobeys just a little, he gets used to it and then does it a little more and more and more until he is disobeying to the max and running away. Equality would be pleased.
The videos This Too Shall Pass and White Knuckles violate the societal norms set forth by the councils in Anthem in a few different ways. In This Too Shall Pass, they have a creative way of creating videos. In Anthem's society, humans all have to agree on something for a decision to be made and people don't really have an identity. In White Knuckles, they show even more of their creativity, which is not shown within Anthem at all. I think Equality would be interested or surprised rather than pleased at all with Okay Go's videos. In Anthem's society, something like the White Knuckles video would be regarded like us going to Jupiter today. It probably wouldn't be regarded at all when nobody has an identity. Overall, the videos show a lot of individualism and creativity, which aren't topics seen at all in Anthem besides with Equality.
I think that the character equality would accept this and really value this because it shows someone going out of the ordinary to show creativity and putting ideas into effect.
In “This Shall Too Pass” the council is just like the people in the video. The people in the video could've just pressed button to shoot the paint, but instead they spent lots of time building the machine to trigger the reaction. They were trying to fix a problem that didn’t need to be fixed. The council also did this in the book. They had to change lots of stuff and spend lots of time trying to fix a problem that wasn’t broken in the first place. Equality would be pleased with both of these videos because they are fun and happy and do something that you wouldn’t expect. It’s cool to see, and isn’t just another boring thing to happen.
They would probably violate the societal norms, because they possibly would be showing too much creativity. I think they council would like a community as a whole to do something like that, but if it was just a few people, they probably would disapprove. Equality would like Okay Go's performances, because it shows inidividualality, and so does Equality.
This Too Shall Pass and White Knuckles violate the societal norms set forth by the council in Anthem because these videos are very chaotic and full of color and movement, and everything is so strict in the book. These videos show the opposite of the book because there is so much going on and it’s fun, where is the book, there is such strict rules of where and what everything has to be, on page 25 the book states “the Students so assigned go to work and they do not study any further.” and the videos are just all over the place. I think Equality would be pleased with the music and art because it is different and fun, not so strict and full of rules.
“This Too Shall Pass” and “White Knuckles” by Okay Go violates the societal norms in the book Anthem because there's a lot of creativity and new technology used throughout the videos. In Anthem, the newest technology is candles. “Should it be what they claim of it, then it would bring ruin to the Department of Candles. The Candle is a great boon to mankind, as approved by all men. Therefore it cannot be destroyed by the whim of one." (page 73). The society has trouble accepting new technology and culture; such as the discovery of electricity. However, I believe that Equality would be pleased with the music and performance in the video because the video is different from what is normal/acceptable in Equality’s life.
"This Too Shall Pass" by Okay Go violates Anthem's councils rules and societal norms because there is chaos and not as organized as Anthem is. There are tons of colors in the video, but in Anthem there is only white, plain, simple and clean. "White knuckles" by Okay go also violates Anthem's societal norms set by the council due to the fun and creativity placed. As well as the fact that everybody has more than one job in the video. While in Anthem you are stuck with one job not multiple. Equality would fascinated with the creativity and difference. Equality likes new things and stuff that he no one has learnt of yet. "But we loved the Science of Things. We wished to know about all the things which make the earth around us. We asked so many questions that the Teachers forbade it." (Rand 23)
If change didn’t exist in either one of the videos then the videos would not exist because the videos are one change in scene after another, the council is completely against change. Anthem values no change and everything is already decided. Equality would be pleased with the performances as he gets to see something exciting and unlike anything he gets to see normally where he lives. Repeatedly in the book they are assigned to things, like the students assigned to their adult jobs, it would be nice for equality to see some change.
