Shall This Pass In "Anthem?"

How would This Too Shall Pass and White Knuckles by Okay Go violate the societal norms set forth by the councils in Anthem?  Looking beyond the obvious, how do the videos exhibit the antithesis of what is valued in Anthem's society?  Would Equality be pleased with Okay Go's performances, designs, and visions for their music and art?  Please include one quotation from Anthem within your response to prove your view(s). This blog response should be completed in class after we view the videos.

The video This Too Shall Pass violates the social norms set forth by Anthem because the people who made the video were using their creativity and having fun while doing so. Also, the video is about changing and reinventing yourself and that is forbidden in Anthem. Also, the video White Knuckles violates the rules set by Anthem because it is also made from a place of creativity.

If the council were to see this on Anthem they would totally discriminate it. they do not like anything that they have not seen or made. This would be totally different from what they are used to so they would make these people probably destroy it."The Council of Scholars has said that we all know the things which exist and therefore all the things which are not known by all do not exist"(Rand pdf).

The video is very elaborate. The book Anthem would never have anything written in it that would distinguish people from their peers. The extravagant colors and stations and centering on certain people at certain times would never be possible in anthem. The music and distinguishing certain people from others using objects is what contrasts these videos from "Anthem."

This video would make equality happy, because all of the unique colors and creative things going on like the speaker playing the music and all of the contraptions going on. He would be astonished by all of the cool things that the video had in it. The leaders would hate the video because of the colorful paint and the electricity that was in the contraption even if it was for a short time. Both videos had people wearing white clothes which would be something the council liked and would have celebrated although they would have hated both videos for all of the crazy and creative stuff that is shown. Equality would have celebrated the use of new inventions and different ways of using everyday stuff to make new thing and new ways of using things.

Social norms in Anthem are way different than how we live today and in the video it shows how those things point out in our daily life. I think in the video how they are all wearing different colored suits can relate to the social norm of how everyone is different in the society we live in today but in Anthem everyone is “equal.” What is valued in Anthem that they show in the video is how they can show how something is so different is that they show their colors bit in Anthem Equality can’t do that. The way the display all of the ways they make their videos unique is so cool like in Anthem pointing out everything unique about him but him thinking that is a sin.

The concept of a rube goldberg contraption would baffle Equality 7-2521. Most of the materials used in the sequence would probably be completely foreign to him, and he'd ask more questions then one can handle. This contrasts the society because where equality's from, asking questions and experimenting is considered a sin.

I think Too Shall Pass connects to the idea of Equality putting together these intricate machines that almost seem impossible to everyone else, but he did in fact put together and create from his learning. The engineers behind this put together a well thought out device just like Equality working and studying and learning all that he could to create things. Like in White Knuckles with the well thought out choreography has the same idea.

This video violates the social norms of Anthem because the people are using a creative mindset while doing something they enjoy. This shows people thinking of yourself which is forbidden in anthem.

I think that the council in Anthem would not be a big fan of what Ok Go is doing in these videos. In This Too Shall Pass it's just very random but it does turn out looking really amazing and impressive. I think that they wouldn't want anyone to do that because it would not benefit the whole society. I think Equality would be very interested in what Ok Go is doing in these videos, and would want to try doing it. Equality would be so surprised by what they are doing because of all the curiosity that is put into it.

Based on the videos I think that Equality would think that the contraptions are cool because of all the engineering how he works with the light bulb. However, the council of scholars probably would think otherwise. I think that people would have wanted to destroy this because it might make people jealous so they would make it so everyone is equal.

The video connects to anthem because to make a machine like that it requires creativity. In anthem their is no creativity aloud

They were creative in a way different from the collective using their brains. It was a pretty cool video

This would not have passed in Equalitie's society because it involves people using their creativity and it also includes many things that are not needed to complete a simple task.

In the community that Equality lives in, there is not allowed to be any amount of creativity. I feel as though if anyone were to do this they would be put to death. But if it were just Equality to see this, he would be inspired and would love to know more.

The machines in the video used simple everyday objects to accomplish a fairly simple task. This relates back to Anthem because together these objects accomplish a task in a pretty phenomenal way similar to how if the people in this society came together, they could accomplish something great as well. Knowledge is a gift that people can combine to do great things. “We made it. We created it. We brought it forth from the night of the ages. We alone. Our hands. Our mind. Ours alone and only” (Rand 59). This quote illustrates Equality’s desire to use his knowledge to accomplish excellent things and that he values the knowledge he possesses. To continue, in this video, a past image of this group is destroyed, similar to how Equality destroyed everything he had in his life and rebuilt his image to match his own desires. This video additionally represented the creativity that lies within one’s self, something that Equality comes to value to a great extent.

Most of what is used in Okay Go’s performances would not be approved of the council because of the amount of pure creativity and uniqueness that would be needed to produce their videos. However, Equality would completely approve their designs and ideas because they take something that could be simplistic and easy and makes it extravagant and different.

This Too Shall Pass and White Knuckles violate the societal norms set by the councils in Anthem because it is sort of a unique and creative set-up, while the society values sameness and uniformity. Equality would be very pleased with their performance because they express themselves in their videos and come up with a creative idea and there is a lot of variety in their videos. A quote that supports this states, "... where each man will be free to exist for his own sake" (Rand 104).

This would violate the societal norms because people are not allowed to have ideas of their own or anything that could be unique. These videos completely go against everything that occurs in "Anthem". I think that Equality would be very pleased with these because he is a creator and inventor himself so he would probably be inspired and interested by what is shown. I’m sure he would love to see this video because he hasn’t been exposed to many of these things due to the strict and harsh things that happen in the society of Anthem.
