"Romeo, Gnomeo, And Juliet?"

After reading Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, what connections or satirized elements do you see employed within the brief clips we viewed in Gnomeo and Juliet?  Please be specific regarding play's characters and plot elements: Capulets, Montagues, balcony scene, Nurse, etc...  This blog response is due during class today.

After reading Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and viewing the brief clips from Gnomeo and Juliet there are many connections or saturized elements I was able to find. The first and obvious connection I was able to find was that all of the characters in Gnomeo and Juliet had the same names as in Romeo and Juliet. Another connection I was able to find was that the two gnome yards had the same intentions as the two families in Romeo and Juliet. They both wanted to be better that the other and try to take down the other as well. Although Gnomeo and Juliet is the rather humorous version of the story, it still has many similarities to the original version.

In Gnomeo and Juliet has similar characters as the original. The blues are the Montagues and red is Capulet, just like the original. Tybalt and Gnomeo are rivals and they both fought. Juliet and Gnomeo meet in secret on the balcony. The Frog/Nurse is the confidant of Juliet.

Within the short clips of Gnome & Juliet you see how they mock the argument. They make the argument seem small and like there is no point to it. They represent the main characters still such as the frog as the Nurse and you still have. The Nurse is still Juliet's biggest supporter. In the movie Juliet does not have a mom but in the play she does. Also, you don't see Mercutio or Romeo's dad in the movie. Romeo still madly falls in love with Juliet but in a more modern way. Another, similar thing is how both family's still hate each other and it is led by the children's parents. Something, unique about this is how the represented the different families. They kept to the same color scheme and kept red vs. blue.

The clips we viewd of Gnomeo and Juliet have many correlations to the play. The two gardens represent the two divided houses and how the two gnome groups despise each other. Tybalt and Gnomeo are rivals much like they are in the play. They also have a scene where Gnomeo sees Juliet and there is true love at first sight. While this is a kids movie. There are tons of correlations between the play and this movie.

I believe this movie was made mostly because they they thought the name was clever. There are hardly any authentic similarities. There are the characters Gnomeo and Juliet who fall in love, and there are the Montague's and Capulet's. The frog represents the nurse, and Gnomeo with his friends. The characters could be the same, but the plot doesn't correlate. Because this is a children's movie so they can't bring too much tragedy. Because children would not understand the actual cruel plot of Romeo and Juliet, extra scenes and action were put in place to make this movie successful. Unlike the play, Gnomeo and Juliet don't meet for a while in the movie, but in the play, right away they meet.Though when the do meet it is humorously the same.

After reading the play Romeo and Juliet then watching the film Gnomeo and Juliet I can see the connections. Although there is the added comedy in the film it follows the characters almost exactly with Lord Capulet being Juliet's father, Juliet as Juliet, Gnomeo and Romeo, and the frog as the Nurse. A small difference in characters is that Romeo’s father is dead in the film and his mother is in charge of their side of the fence. Also, Paris doesn’t seem to be a character in the film as far as we could see. As far the the plot, from what we could see the Prologue was also similar although it was never finished in the film. Rather than two servants fighting in the first scene of the movie it begins with a lawn mower race between the two house which shows the hatred in a more kid friendly way. Romeo and Juliet don’t meet through ball Gnomeo just breaks into the other side of the fence and happens to run into Juliet on his way out. This may not be the same but it still sticks to the idea that Romeo was crashing into the Capulets territory when he first saw Juliet. The scene where Romeo and Juliet meet is similar in both the book and the film.

Gnomeo and Juliet is like a modernized version of Romeo and Juliet. There's a conflict between the blue and red gnomes seems to have Gnomeo and Juliet pretty wrapped up. There doesn't seem to be a Rosaline, which is depressing, but that's okay. The nurse seems to be a frog sprinkler and posses a humor (though a different type). Tybalt seems a little more conceited that he was in the original, but it's a modernized version, so everything is exaggerated for humor. In the beginning, the street was named Verona, which is where the original play takes place, and the mailboxes in front of the houses say "Montague" and "Capulet."

After reading Shakespear's "Romeo and Juliet," I found multiple connections. The first connection I saw was that the housholds where the Gnomes live in the movie are Monatgue and Capulet, but not the Gnomes themeselfs. Another similarity that I found between the movie and the book, is that the Nurse (or the Frog) is still kind of Juliet's wingman. The plot is obviously changed becuase it is a kids movie. For example, Romeo (Gnomeo) and Juliet meet in a very different way rather than the Capulets or the Reds having a party. Instead, they both find a flower at the same time and meet. Those were just the connections I found within the first twenty minutes of the movie.

The movie, Gnomeo and Juliet almost all the key events in Romeo and Juliet are present. For example all the characters in Romeo and Juliet are in one way or another in Gnomeo and Juliet. The frog translates to the Nurse, Romeo translates to Gnomeo. The rage between the two families translates to the rage between the two gardens and exc. The plot also follows the same coarse; Roemo and Juliet meet and find later that they are from enemy families.

I noticed that there the characters all had names that were all either from Romeo and Juliet or almost the same. Some examples are Gnomeo(Romeo), Juliet, Tybalt, and Benny(Benvolio). There were also some scenes that were very similar, such as the fights with Tybalt, when Gnomeo finds Juliet and they are both surprised and sad that the other was their enemy. There was also the small details such as that the houses were on Verona Drive and the numbers were 2b and not 2b (To be or not to be).

Some connections I can make with the Movie Gnomeo and Juliet and with the play Romeo and Juliet are in the Film they meet unexpected just like in the play. Tybalt a Romeo are rivals in the book as well as the film. The film shows the rival between the Montague's and the Capulates just like in the book. The movie and book are the same in many ways.

Within the brief clips that I viewed in Gnomeo and Juliet, the connections I can make to the play Romeo and Juliet are that the plot is still keeping the same idea but showing it in a more creative way. Regarding the play’s characters, the Montagues and Capulets, are separated as the blues(Montagues) and the reds(Montagues) in the movie. The other similarities from the play to the movie are that the red and blue gnomes are rivals and the street they live on is named Verona Drive. In the ‘balcony scene’ in the movie, Gnomeo and Juliet instantly fall in love like they do in the play.

After watching Gnomeo and Juliet, I saw many connections between the book and the movie; one of which was the relationship between Tybalt and Gnomeo. In the book, the two character hate each other and end up fighting. A similar thing happens in the movie when Gnomeo and Tybalt race lawnmowers. Just like in the book, Gnomeo loses something and wants to get revenge on Tybalt.

After watching short clips in the movie Gnomeo and Juliet, I saw a bunch of connections within the movie and the book. First, in the book their were two families who were royal enemies. They showed that every clear in the movie with a red vs. blue situation and with the neighbors hating on each other. Next, Tybalt was a strong man who acted like he ruled everyone and wasn't a fan of Romeo. When Gnomeo and Juliet first met, it was love at first site and when Romeo and Juliet met, it was the same situation.

After watching the few clips of the movie Gnomeo and Juliet, I saw a few connections between the movie and the book. In the beginning it shows the hatred between each sides of the reds and blues. When the owners were leaving their houses, they were shouting at each other. Now like in the book even the servant hated each other, the gnomes in this case would be the servants. The reds in the movie resembled Capulets, because the book had them dressed in red. The blues are the Montagues just like in the story when romeo wore blue tights. In the story and in the movie Romeo and Tybalt didn't like each other, so in the movie they would race with lawnmowers. Romeo and Juliet didn't meet the same way, but they fell in love immediately when they saw each other, just like the book. But when they found out they were from opposite sides they both were stunned. Just like in the book Juliet went talking about Romeo to the nurse, but in the movie the nurse was a frog. The movie and book have very similar designs to them, but portrayed in different ways.
