Cyclops: Text To Film In "The Odyssey?"

What subtle or overt differences did you notice regarding the Book IX The Odyssey reading and The Odyssey film clip of the Cyclops episode?  Explain, note, argue, quote, and defend.  Anything regarding the Heroic Code, Guest/Host Relationship, or hubris?  After watching the film clip, please respond during class.

I spotted a few differences between the book and the film. One difference that I noticed was that in the book the Cyclops ate four men and not one. In the book Odysseus also said that his name was noman rather than nobody. The text and the clip are still very similar just with slight changes between them.

There are a couple differences between the cyclops episode. Some of them include what his actions. In the book Odysseus had acted differently than in the movie. Some of the things include that he volunteered to be eaten while this did not happen in the book, also more people were eaten in the book rather than the one in the movie. He also gave him wine and played the flute but did not play the flute in the book. He also gave a different name in the movie rather than the one in the book. At the end they go out under the sheep in order to escape.

In the book he said, "I am no man', but in the movie it said nobody hurt me. They left out the ram. They held on to the sheep rather than using sheep skin. The text also never talked about magic in odysseus head.

The video and book are similar in that Odysseus and his men say that they should have a guests welcome. He gives the cyclops wine in the book and video. In the video he says that his name is nobody but in the book he says that he is no man. He also tells him his "name" during a different time in a story. In the book they escape the cave by using sheep but they don't in the video.

I noticed some small differences along with some larger differences. But the way the men reacted are slightly different from the way they acted in the book. For example Odysseus had to hold one of his men back from attacking the cyclops but in the book they seemed more scared of the cyclops then feel the need to attack him.

There are many differences from the film to the book, he said "we are noman" but in the film the said, "I am no-bo-dy. They also said that they helped themselves to be his guests and that they brought gifts while in the book they just stole his food and didn't say they had gifts. In the book it said that even horses couldn't move the stone, which holds true in the film. Even though they have these differences the same point still got across and allowed for the story to still have the same message/meaning overall.

There were some big differences were that in the book the men would hide underneath the sheep and under their stomach but in the movie the one man hid with a sheep blanket while the others just went around the cyclops. Another difference was how in the book it described how the olive wood was from Athena but in the movie it appeared out of nowhere without any explanation.

The difference between the story he said " I am no man" in the film it is " I am nobody" also another difference the men offer a to make the cyclops a meal which they did not in the story. Also Odysseus said that he had magic secrets in his head so the cyclops could not hurt him. This was not written in the story.

In the book, Odysseus calls himself NOMAN and in the film he calls himself NOBODY. Also in the book the Odysseus tells the men to tie themselves to the bellies of the sheep but in the clip one guy covers himself with a sheep skin.

The differences I noticed was that Athena did not have the favorability, and Odysseus had to fight the Cyclops all by himself. It is interesting to think he didn't have help from his fellow gods. He is shown as more glorified than he was in the book. Also, the violent scenes werent as graphic as the ones in the book.

Some of the many differences in the cyclops episode are how the ogre ate more than one man in the book but in the movie he ate only 1. Another difference is in the book the people all just ran out to escape but in the movie one man discised himself to look like a sheep to escape. One similarity to the book is how odyeseus talks his way out of their tricks so that he and his men would survive. He basically is really good at talking his way out of harmful situations.

It's very similar but the movie has different things in them like when he tells the cyclops his name in the book he says its noman and in the movie he says its nobody. There were far more differences than that but that one stood out more to me.

I noticed that in the book, the stick used to blind the cyclops was an olive branch, which is the symbol of Athena. But in the movie they do not say whether it was or not, or how it got there. I also noticed that the stick was supposed to be put into a fire, but there is none of that in the film. But the cyclops was the son of Posieden, who is supposed to hate Athena. So I think that the olive branch could have been a sign from Athena.

The video and the book are very similar, but with a few differences. In the book, Odysseus tell the Cyclops his name is No man, but in the video Odysseus says Nobody. In the book the stick is put into the fire while in the video it was not. Then in the book the men escape by riding the underbellies of the Cyclops’ sheep, while the video only had them escape on their feet while Polyphemus was blind and stumbling about. These are obvious differences, but they are not major deviances from the plot or the main point of the story, so they shouldn't really be paid much attention to.
