Shall This Pass In "Anthem?"

How would This Too Shall Pass and White Knuckles by Okay Go violate the societal norms set forth by the councils in Anthem?  Looking beyond the obvious, how do the videos exhibit the antithesis of what is valued in Anthem's society?  Would Equality be pleased with Okay Go's performances, designs, and visions for their music and art?  Please include one quotation from Anthem within your response to prove your view(s). This blog response should be completed in class after we view the videos.

In both videos they use creativity and being and individual to create something new and unique. In Anthem, Everybody acted the same and nobody was unique. In anthem everyone is treated like the same person and that no one matter or is unique.

In the video the people had to be creative and come up with ideas to entertain people and they had to think about that stuff. In the book the main character had to be creative and think about what his new name would be, "His name was Prometheus"(Rand 99).

I think that even though he is all about change and discovery this would be a little weird to him, however, he would be mesmerized nevertheless. “The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them" (Rand 52).This would be new, a secret, but he seeks new adventures and discoveries. he would like and explore the video.

Things that would violate the forms is all the color and different uniforms. I think that equality would be pleased by what is happening because it is breaking the normal and showing how different is good. An example of that is,“The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them¨ (pg. 52.) this shows that it's good to be different for some people.

The video shows how to be creative and how to show expression. Equality would not like this video because of how creative it is and how much emotion it has. Equality likes things the way they should be and not how others should be. He doesn't like expression or freedom of voice so he would not like this video.

This video violates the terms behind Anthem because the people in the video are creative and think differently/ have a large personality. In Anthem, the characters are almost set to a specific type and can't neseacarily think differently than the rest. This video has lots of expression in emotion and has a very complex thought and interesting feel. Equality would not approve with this video because it is not to the normal "Anthem" standards. Equality is very normal and does not have many different expressions. “I guard my treasures: my thoughts, my will, my freedom. And the greatest of the is freedom(Rand 95-96). This expresses how Equality shows the want for freedom and choice of action.

The video is very creative and shows how people can accomplish amazing things. It goes away from the social norm by being colorful and avoiding simple things. Equality tries to go out of the social norm by creating things that he shouldn't be creating and by trusting and loving someone he shouldn't be with. “I guard my treasures: my thought, my will, my freedom. And the greatest of these is freedom.” (Rand 95-96). This quote shows how Equality is treasuring his invention and his newly gained freedom. It also shows how he different from everyone else.

The videos of This Too Shall Pass and OK go express individuality and that defies the norm displayed in Anthem. It is said in Anthem that everyone should be equal and selfless. Equality in Anthem would like these videos because the videos portray his beliefs and how he thinks. The book frowns upon because selfish. It says "I do not surrender my treasures, nor do I share them," this quote expands upon Equality's idea that his ideas are his and he wants other people to agree with him and want them to help him break the status quo. Equality's views are similar to the video also because he doesn't want everything to be in order and want things to be different in society.

I think the council would not approve anything about these videos because they are doing anything that helps there bothers and the music is not like anything they sing or what the are used to

I think that equality would like that the videos are unique and how it isn't the same basic music video that you would usually see, and he has learned to love the differences in the world.

Equality would not approve of OKAY GO'S performances on some parts but Equality would approve of other parts. Equality has lived a life of the same thing, with not a lot of colors, and not a unique personal touch. So equality may disagree with Okay Go's performance because there are certain things that Equality has never been exposed to and was taught to think is wrong. Equality may applaud the performance because the band needs not just "I" but "We." This statement can be contradicted depending where you are in the reading. We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever" (Rand 15).

When it comes to comparing Equality from Ayn Rand's "Anthem" to some of OK Go's videos, they have a few conflicting ideas and concepts. OK Go's videos largely involve teamwork. All of them play a specific part and the overall project fails without them all collaborating. Equality claims that selfishness in situations like these should be valued. Equality makes claims that are against teamwork, like when he says "The word ‘We’ is as lime poured over men, which sets and hardens to stone, and crushes all beneath it, and that which is white and which is black are lost equally between the grey of it" (Rand 97). This quote claims that everyone being equal and having equal individual roles is actually exclusive and doesn't take the different talents of the group into account. In this way, Equality's views mirror Ayn Rand's views.

This Too Shall Pass and White Knuckles by Okay Go violate the societal norms set forth by the councils in Anthem because the council wants everyone to think for others, not themselves and in the video Ok Go violates that. This quote perfectly explains how Equality would feel towards the videos. “I owe nothing to my brothers, nor do I gather debts from them. I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others. I covet no man’s soul, nor is my soul theirs to covet.” (Rand 96). Equality wants to live for himself and others to live for themselves and Ok Go does that.

Their videos definitely would violate the social norms that the council had set forth. The council had rules basically against everything that was included in the video, Equality would sure be pleased to see something so different and out of the box like himself and to have seen that his courage brought him to bridge what the council and his society had wanted so desperately to cut off. Independence.

They violate the norms set in anthem due to the uniqueness and creativity brought into the videos and each person having a different role. In Anthem, creativity is banned along with being different than anyone else and having thoughts that were not thought by the council. Equality would most definitely be pleased with this video as he is all for society and man being able to become themselves and into their own. “We are one… alone...and only...and we love you who are one...alone...and only” is a quote which explains equality love for being who you are just like the video.

This would not go well in anthem because as we can see from the way they assign occupations, that their community is purely logical and efficient. only things that need to be done are done, and these videos make no logical sense and serve no purpose.

The video This Too Shall Pass violates many societal norms in the book Anthem. It wa very creative and colorful. In the book they only wore one color, white. They wear all wore a different color of paint which was not allowed in the Anthem society. Also there was no music in the Anthem society and the videos were both based on music. In the Anthem society they were scared of difference. They wanted everything to be the same. When Prometheus showed the council the power he had descovered the council said,""This thing," They said, "must be destroyed."(Rand 74)". This means that they were scared and that they didn't want more change.

In both of the videos, they were both made from creativity and working as group from everyone to help everything go as planned. In the book Anthem, everything and everyone seems dull and doesn't come up with creative ideas like the videos.

The videos are different and sow expression in personalities, just like Equality, throughout the book he finds himself and his personality. When he discovers himself and stops using "we" he says,"My hands...My spirit...My Sky...My forest...This Earth is mine." (Rand 94). He discovered his freedom and in the videos there was some freedom from creativity and to be yourself. The council would've frowned upon this just like they did to Equality. They are all very similar.

The videos “This Too Shall Pass” and “White Knuckles” would not be acceptable by the council in the book Anthem. The councils of Anthem believe that no men should be unique and creative. If this happened in Anthem, the band would be punish severely just like how equality was for the light bulb. This video shows creative, which is not accepted in the society of Anthem. Equality thought, "Many words have been granted me, and some are wise, and some are false, but only three are holy: ‘I will it!’” (Rand 95). By thinking creatively, Equality managed to realize what was wrong with his society. This proves that he would approve of the video.

TTSP: I feel the council would not like any of this. They would hate the waste of materials used in this, they’d be confused by this music and art in this video. They wouldn’t like the different colors and how unorderly the colors were like. I think they wouldn’t like how they destroyed the TV and was probably violent. They wouldn’t feel like they are useful in their society. “You shall do that which the council of Vocations shall prescribe for you… ...And if you are not needed by your brother men, there is no reason for you to burden the Earth with your bodies.” (Rand 22)
WK: I think the council would like the matching all white props and clothes but I don’t think they would like the dogs and find them useless, I also think they wouldn’t like the different types of dogs and how they aren’t as good as following orders like when the two dogs were walking and stopping in the background that the second one was a little slower. They wouldn’t like the individuality of the dogs, “We are one in all and all in we, There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever.” (Rand 19)

This video violates the terms of Anthem in the way of change. In the book, it is shown that there is not a lot of change or different things going on. Everybody is put into a cookie cutter mold which not everybody can fit into. Equality, the main character, breaks this mold and is trying to find all of these things out in a creative way just like in the videos we watched in class. This is mentioned right off the bat of the book in the quote, "It is a sin to write this”(Rand 1).

The two videos done by Okay Go would both be viewed very heavily as something very bad or very wrong in the society of "The Anthem". Equality however, might really enjoy these videos and the ideas from it simply because it is so different and out of the norm which iust exactly what he wanted in "The Anthem". “The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them" (52). This shows that someone or a group of people like Okay Go were able to seek the secrets of earth and come up with something that many would not think of.

The video shall this pass shows a lot of creativity and it looks like they are having fun and in the world of anthem not a lot of people like that creativity is bad to them and having fun is something they don't like that so the video ¨shall this pass¨ is the opposite have how some people are in Anthem.

In both videos they are creative but they don't have anything to do with the song so it is kinda random but I think it is really cool. Just like Equality, throughout the book, he finds himself and his creative personality

The music video shows that even if you're trying to make one thing you could show or portray it another way. Anthem wouldn´t like this video because it shows people having their own say and emotion. Anthem likes things that are very monotone.

The videos by Okay Go would violate the social norms of the society in "Anthem" by Ayn Rand because the videos show color, they are complex, and they have a sense of freedom when expressing their art. Equality would be pleased with Okay Go's performances. He would like the variety and creativity that the videos show. “I guard my treasures: my thought, my will, my freedom. And the greatest of these is freedom.” (Rand 95-96) Equality values the freedom people have and the videos show how much freedom they had to express themselves.
