Cyclops: Text To Film In "The Odyssey?"

What subtle or overt differences did you notice regarding the Book IX The Odyssey reading and The Odyssey film clip of the Cyclops episode?  Explain, note, argue, quote, and defend.  Anything regarding the Heroic Code, Guest/Host Relationship, or hubris?  Please respond during class today.

The movie seemed a lot more gruesome, because you got to see what had happened. The book had more description about what had happened. In the book he is a lot more prideful and cocky. The Cyclops is a lot more creepy and mean in the book. The text was a lot longer and boring then the movie. The movie is action packed and describes the story better in my opinion. In the book it gave me an image in my head, the book gave me one but not as clearly as the movie. The book said that Odysseus strapped everyone to a sheep but in the movie only one person did that.

In the book there was no flute player, The eye ball burst, the sheep were bigger, the other cyclopes didn't come over to check out who blinded Polyphemus, The men rode on the bottom of the sheep out of the cave as apposed to wearing the skin of the sheep. The island was clear and sunny, not foggy.

During the book they but the spike in the fire. When stabbing the cyclopes instead of running in the book he twisted the spike in his eye.

In the Odyssey book 9 many things take place including some smart things and some not as smart things. Such as when Odysseus comes up with the plan to blind the giant then escape on the stomachs of sheep. But later on when he promotes his true name to the giant he doesn't realize the problems to come with it. Now to answer if he follows the heroic code I'd say he does an ok job with that. For his guest/host relationship he completely disobeys that with his violent/mischievous demeanor.

there was a little bit of a difference between the book and the movie like i didnt see them ride under the sheep to get out of the cave. The movie was more entertaining than the book and was shorter and the text was long and boring.

There are several differences but everything is overall the same. I feel like in the video it doesn't show his pride as much as the book exhibits. In the video not as many of the men were killed either which I think would have been very important to show because it would have showed Odysseus selfishness. Another difference was the men hiding under the sheep. In the video only one guy, who was not Odysseus hid under. In the book several men including Odysseus did this. The video did a good job of showing the pain the Cyclops felt when he got stabbed in his eye and how he was blind. Odysseus was not a good guest in the book or the book because he took out the Cyclops eye but he was a little more generous in the clip. The other cyclops also didn't come out to see what was happening.

When you do something good you should't tell everybody and just gloat just doing it should be the reason your doing it not to get attention. In the stories and the movie Odysseus did something very wise but then he messed it up when he pointed to that name on the back so to speak instead of just letting his actions speak for themselves.

The book 9 puts the movie into prospective a lot. Because they maybe said one thing in book and then do it differently in the movie. They both have a lot of differences, between the movie and the book. But the Cyclops did trust the men. Hens the fact that he fell asleep with strangers in his cave. And they sharpened the stick and was planning to "kill" the cyclops but ended up stabbing his eye and blinding him.

Odysseus seemed a lot more prideful and selfish in the book than in the movie. I believe that his actions were half and half with the heroic code and didn't follow the guest relations better. His decisions caused good and bad for everybody. He made a huge mistake by bragging about being able to out wit the cyclops.

In the film there is just one guy who wears a sheep skin. Were as in the movie Odysseus has this awesome idea to strap his crew to the sheep. In the book the cyclopes also stops the ram that Odysseus was on and starts to talk to it. Plus in the movie there was no flute player.

They escaped by hanging underneath the sheep in the book but in the video they just run out. Their were alsom more people eaten in the book then in the video. I think you get a better idea of how stuck up Odysseus is in the book then in the video. I think that Polyphemus was completely okay with eating him and his men because they wandered willingly into his home, and he isn't human so it really isn't cannibalism.

The movie was closely related to the text in the fact that it showed every detail from the book. Although, the movie shows the individual emotions of the people. The movie showed their facial expressions and the body language. The movie also had clearer dialogue than the book in the fact that they spoke the way we do, instead of the way they did thousands of years ago. The book movie did leave out smaller details that the book could include but only because of times sake.

From reading the story and watching the film, there were many differences. One of his men in the film crawled under the cyclops and I don't recall this happening in the story from class. Also the film seemed to be much more gruesome and was taken from a different setting and perspective than the story is told.

Some differences are that in the book Odysseus he hid under the sheep and in the movie clip only one guy thought of doing that. Also the book everybody survived from hiding under the sheep and in the movie one guy died during it. In the book Odysseus already had the stake made but in the movie the made it during the cyclopes sleeping.

Odysseus is very prideful and selfish. He ends up in the home of someone who appears to be much stronger and much more powerful and yet he has no respect for his host. He acts as if he is in his own home. When the cyclops warns Odysseus and his men that he will eat them Odysseus sees this as a challenge to his pride. Pride is the most important thing to Odysseus and he is so selfish that he exchanges the lives of his men for the bragging rights of defeating a cyclops.

In the book, the sheep were much larger than in the movie because they were the same size to the cyclops as normal sheep are to us. This meant the men were able to escape by clinging onto the sheep as opposed to wearing sheep skin. Overall, the movie does a better job describing it's story, but it doesn't quite fit all the parameters as in the book.

Of course there were differences in the movie to how this scene was executed and told, but I don't find either one better than the other. I find Odysseus in the book more cunning and deceitful in the book than in the movie because you get to see Odysseus' reactions and expressions to things like his men getting eaten, and that helps relate to him since he feels more human.

The differences that I noticed between the video and the text were the video seemed more fake because of the cyclopes and the text seemed more intense. I also think that Odysseus didn't seem as cocky in the movie. The text describes him and Odysseus thinking he is the king of the world and in the movie he sorta seems like one of the other guys.In the movie I know can visualize what everything looks like but when I read the only the book I had to make up what I thought everything would look like.

Some differences I noticed were how more elegantly everyone spoke in the book, how much more dramatic and overacted it was in the movie, and how the others were timid and afraid in the movie. Also, in the book they tied themselves to rams to trick the Cyclops so they could escape. Odysseus seemed more confident, knowing, and cocky in the book as well than the movie.

The differences between the book and the clip is that the book just tells you what happened and the clip tells shows you all the details. Also I think the clip is better because it shows you everything that happened and tells you everything. Unlike the book because the book just tells you some of the story and it doesn't tell you all of it. Also the clip is more exciting than the book.

The movie seemed like it was more similar to the actual Greek poem. With the Corey details etc

During the book there weren't as much details as there were in the movie. Some things were the sharpening of this stick was different than I thought also there was more blood than I thought when he got stabbed but the main thing that I noticed was how Odysseus attitude was much cockier in the movie than in the book. Those are just some of the differences I noticed but there were more that I'm not going to say. But my main point is that there are differences between the book and movie. ~Brad Garcia

In the book There was no flute player, they stabbed and turned the spike, the sheep were big enough for the men to go under, the men rode under the sheep instead of under a wool blanket. In the book we had to visualize what was happening and in the movie we actually got to see what was happening.

In the book I don't remember a flute player. In the movie there were more details because we able to visualize what was going on. I feel like the people were more rude in the book, and the cyclops was not as scary in the movie. Overall there were just suddle differences between the movie and the book.
